Format, only way to get rid of it properly, get an external hard drive and move the stuff you wanna keep onto that and format your main drive.

Before doing anything to drastic go and download the Antivir rescue and burn it to a CD you can boot to the CD and run a complete scan of your computer and it should get rid of any viruses you have

http://www.avira.com/en/company_news/rescue_cd_.html

If you can't get on the internet and download or burn a CD because of the virus get someone to download and burn it on a CD for you.
I have managed to get my mates PC going again with this after he got a virus and finished up his PC wouldn't get past about half way in booting up before it locked up.

Something that has worked well for me is to take the hard drive out and put it in a USB case, then plug it into a healthy computer and scan it from there as an external drive. You don't even really need to remove the drive, you just need to expose it enough to get an IDE/SATA cable from it to an opened up usb drive enclosure - you can even leave the power plugged in and use the infected computer to power it (although you'll need to unplug the power lead while you swap the data leads).

Because it's treated purely as a data drive nothing on it executes, so anything nasty lurking on there doesn't get a chance to (a) infect you or (b) hide itself from your anti-virus software.

That's the way we used to do it when I was in the IT office ...

ps - watch out for System Restore Points - described by one of the top geeks I know as "Microsoft's way of ensuring that you can never really get rid of a virus"

If you cant format from the main ways or find and remove the virus i reckon you do what chairman suggests ,you mite even get it all back to what it was before the virus and not have to reinstall windows again..
just outta interest what do you think the name of the error virus you have and can you track it to what you installed ,last one i had was a fake avg install 2009 bla bla ..
