TrackIr question

The place to ask for help or solve each others technical issues and discuss hardware

Postby Bazza » Thu Dec 09, 2010 9:09 am

Rather than Hi-jack the thread on facial tracking, thought I'd ask this here....

In these type of tracking programs, is it necessary to install multiple monitors....?

It occurs to me that if I am required to look to the left to change the view perspective, I'm no longer looking ahead at my solitary monitor, so again have lost
my point of view.

Over all the upgrades of the MS sims, one thing has spoiled the "real as it gets" situation for me. That is the lack of peripheral vision, i.e. on making a banking turn
to line up an airfield the lack of ability to keep a track of where it actually is despite banging away with the hat-switch. In a real situation the peripheral vision seems to
work with your brain to let you know exactly where you are situated. (Depth perception..?) I have the hat-switch set up to "swivel" at speed but this only seems to help up to a point. Often
if the banking movement is steep the view generated is down-ward, again missing the location of the airstrip.

My limited understanding of TrackIr, is that the set-up may assist on this, but again the monitor question raises itself. Like many others, space availability, and other
uses of the PC mean a desk full of monitors is not going to happen, apart from budgetary restraints - (SWMBO.)

Your thoughts...?

Bazza I have had TrackIR for a very long time now, and have used it on one monitor, you can set the axis amplification from as little response to as much as you can handle. I can get all 6DoF full rotation with as little as 2 to 3 inches of head movement and never loose site of the monitor.
For approaches it works a treat, you can target your LZ and follow through all the way through the turns for a perfect line up. Or if you are into combat simming then it is a must, you can just track that boggie all the time and your craft will follow till the guns bare down on him.

Did I hesitate before buying my TiR4? hell yes, do I regret it? hell no smile.gif only bad decision I made was not to get the proclip with the deal, I have since gotten that as the reflective trackers have major drawbacks with parasitic light sources.

TiR for viewing can be compared with flying with a keyboard instead of a yoke.
Regards always

Hey Baz. I'd echo Pete's comments by saying that setup properly (with the right acceleration for head movement - this took me awhile to discover) the TrackIR solution works well on one monitor. I treated myself to TrakIR5 (pro w the active LED headset widget) for my birthday a few weeks back and arent disappointed. Takes a wee bit of getting used to the sensitivity and sensation but am now loving it.

I only use 1 monitor and wouldn't flight sim without a trackir. Makes it so much more enjoyable in my opinion.
