Can anyone confirm that FSX will be fully compatible with 10 - or is now a good time to go with FSX Steam? (or staying with 7 of course!)

Currently I'll stick with what I have but word has it 'Steam' really cooks with FSX , I'm still to install and compare .. doubt if an OS will do anything special other than cause problems , stick with tried and trusted you know.

I've installed both FSX and FS9 in windows 10 preview and both ran fine. Of course, as always, MS could change things before the final release but at least it's looking pretty hopeful to me.

On a related note I also installed Battle of Britain (BOB) in windows 10 where it ran fine in XP mode - that's a plus as it won't run in window 8 at all.

I had the opposite, tried FSX in Win10 beta and plummeted to unplayable frames and that was with just default scenery

I tried the latest build as a dual boot on my laptop. It just kept freezing and then crashing. I did 2 complete installs on a reformatted partition.
It seemed ok when it worked but navigating around seemed unnecessarily time consuming. I did like the multiple desktops though. Good for messy buggers like me that have too much on my desktop.

Well, for years there has been a pattern - every second variant of the Win OS has been a dud. XP was great, and stable, Vista was not; Win7 is great and stable. I have no experience of Win 8, but it was very quickly replaced by Win 8.1 and now we are being offered Win 10....via a partial install which puts a quickstart icon in your taskbar, without asking do you want that. Just like they tried to sneak IE8 in, under the radar, as part of the monthly update thing, even though several nations had told them to stop forcing the use of IE by building it in to the Win OS.
I will not allow MS to upgrade my Win7 machine to a Win 10 Beta OS just because it suits them. The EULA may well, in their minds, allow them to do that, but it is madness to automate that process when they have not the faintest idea of what I have installed, and have no intention of finding out, before "improving" my machine to what they think I should have - that decision is simply beyond their competence.

I don't quite see it that way, they are not forcing anything on anyone, you still get to choose whether you want to upgrade. I would imagine that 80% of windows users will choose to upgrade within the free-offer window. There are plenty of reasons why some people might not, and having an obsolete flightsim is certainly a good enough reason.

The 'every second version is a dud' is a bit glib for me, I certainly haven't found it that way -- the only dud for me was ME, which was a bit too unstable, but since then each version has been a steady increase in stability and usability. I've had no problems with 8 and 8.1, I like the current desktop and I like the 'modern' apps. Sure, there's an annoying disconnect between the two, which I understand that Win 10 tries to fix, so it looks like another great leap forward to me.

Yes, I have a new icon on my taskbar, but I won't be using it -- I am responsible for 3 PCs, so I'd rather download Win 10 once and do a manual upgrade, than download it three times. I've accidentally stumbled on a couple of sites offering ways to get rid of the icon, so it is hardly an inconvenience.

Hello Rob -
Not much point dwelling on the past, but we are essentially in agreement. There used to be two bloodlines, Win NT and Win.nn
Win 98 was not very good, but Win 98SE (second edition, not Steam) was good and stable. Then we got Win ME, an attempt to crossbreed NT and Win 98, which did not really get anything right. The next one was Win XP, which did in fact provide a stable reliable OS - XP only needed a couple of service packs to make it very very good.
Once I get to hear that the latest MS OS is stable and reliable, I will look at adopting it. That will probably be in about 12 months, or more.

Cheers

My first Windows was 3.1 -- that was certainly one of the 'good' ones, it seemed to hang around for ever. Before there was DOS -- please don't make me go back!
This probably explains why I like upgrading, there's been a LOT of improvements over that time.

Brilliant. You know you're old when the things which were once new and exciting are now museum exhibits..
