This is quite common for DVD/CD read/write units , they are very cheap and simple to replace , i have replaced one with very similar problems two so years back , price only around $30/40 dollars .

Yes, CD/DVD combo drives tend to compromise a bit on the CD side, so if you are going to have trouble, it is more likely with CDs. I've gone through a few drives, but then again I mainly use them for burning CDs.

Sometimes this is simply a bit of dust or something on the laser -- try giving it a burst of air -- carefully!

Really Rob? I have a DVD drive that stopped recognising disks, but didn't think to try that. I'll save it from the rubbish bin and try it out. Cheers smile.gif

Someone told me that many CD/DVD players have a "life-cycle" built into them - rather like the laser cartridges on a printer - and it's possible to go over this threshold by burning too many CDs/DVDs. It sounds incredible, but he was assured that this was the case.

The other problem is with Starforce (protection) - that's been known to "knobble" drives.

I've had some CD/DVD drives that have gone for years, while others crapped out within months (even if they're "well known" brands). These days, I just buy the cheapest OEM thing I can find and hope for the best.
