Recently bought a new tv and wanted to connect my PC to it, got as far as figuring out that I need a dvi to vga adaptor/cable but that's it. How would I get sound? I don't think I could plug in my PC speakers straight into the TV?

How about HDMI? This is designed specifically for this sort of use, so if your new TV includes HDMI support then this is a better solution.
Failing that, you can just leave the speakers plugged into the PC, and move them closer to the computer, otherwise you'll need to take the sound output on the PC to the TV's input to use the TV's speakers.

Well the TV does have HDMI ports, but under the blue VGA one it has 'PC' not sure if it has to be connected to that one or if it could go to another. My PC doesn't have any HDMI ports though, at least not that I can remember.

DVI (from your graphics card) to HDMI on your TV
That's how I do it.

I do what Nick just suggested too. Dick Smith Electronics sell cables like the one above as well.

Might get that and give it a try, I know HDMI cables can carry sound but does it still work when it's different connections on each end? My graphics card is a GTX280, and IIRC it had something on the box about the card being able to carry sound?

No, because you will have to connect a sound card to your graphics cards, but I don't think DVI will carry sound?
Just plug a 2.5mm stereo jack from your computer sound output (off the motherboard) to your home theater if you have one, otherwise some speakers or your TV if it has something to plug into (headphone plug probably won't work)

This depends on your graphics card -- most ATI cards will serve up sound via a DVI->HDMI adapter.
