The real issue is what you have your default aircraft set to when the Free Flight screen comes up - FS loads that aircraft in the background when FS starts, so if it's not the Ultralight, Cessna etc and you have it load another complex aircraft, FSX gets confused internally when you try to load a different complex aircraft on top of the one that's already loaded invisibly. If you have FSX set to the default MS Ultralight at Friday Harbor, you should be able to load most complex aircraft right there from Free Flight and then straight into the sim.
