Warning for the AVG users

WARNING AVG UPDATES For Win7-64bit PC operators , AVG had an automatic update installed on my system , do not install it , just off the phone from the computer shop finding no hardware problem and simply a software bug with the AVG antivirus program .

Ian go to the Microsoft site and download Microsoft Security Essentials it has been highly recommended by Brian Livingston Editor of Windows Secrets Newsletter.
I have been using it from when it first became available and have no problems with it and never had a virus or any malware since I installed it.

i use avast at the mo, seems pretty good, security essentials works pretty well too

I second avast for a freebe. AVG is to resorce hungry. Ditch it and go with avast as it has a silent gaming mode.

I have tried them all, am now with MSSE, mainly on the advice given from a forum on the subject, haunted by guru's who
kmnow much more about the subject than I ever will.

I have been very pleased with it, and installed it on many other systems for family and friends.

By co-incidence, this is sent from my son's system, where I removed AVG today and installed MSSE. The rubbish
that was found in the initial scan was impressive......

Having said that, of the freebies I would rate them....MSSE, Avast, and AVG a long way back.

If you are still running Nortons , well, what can I say....

Then again, if you want to actually pay for a full program, I can't help you, never been there..

The MS freebie is getting rave reviews at the mo and appears to be actually the best AV on the market - pretty good for an MS product (even though I use Windows, not a Mac, I still find MS stuff pretty poorly written). The reason I stick with Avast is history - they've consistently had a good, fairly quick product for over 8 years now. All the others (MS excluded since it's only just started this year) have been up and down. Case in point: Norton. This year, Norton has actually produced a good product (I'm told) - but that's on the back of 5 straight years of bad ones. Not a good record!

In the end, there's no such thing as a perfect AV. Anyone who claims such is a liar. As it happens, I firmly believe that ALL of the AV providers actually fund the creation of viruses, and that the whole thing is a massive con. I also believe MS is in on it. There's just too much money at stake, and it's too easy to actually fix all the holes, for me to believe anything other than we're all being fleeced: either in money (for those who pay for their AV), or lost productivity. Ever notice how Apple & Linux regularly have masses of security patches released, yet very rarely is there a problem? It's true that MS makes the biggest target - they also have the deepest pockets to get it right - if they wanted to. I don't believe they do. Neither do the AV providers. When you're talking about billions of dollars a year... well, money talks.

I'll now put my tinfoil hat back in it's case and hop of my soap box...

I fully recommend MalwareBytes for the occasional system scan. Free and amazing what it picks up that others don't.

Good to hear its not to bad Ian....i hated it when mine died, its like having an arm cut off (i imagine) When mine came home from the doc, they had installed MSSE which i find great and also they gave me (installed) a little thing called "advanced system care" which is also great.....or i hope it is....pete?....it auto defrags (incl reg) sacns for dup files, spyware.....and other stuff....i just leave it alone.

Anyway, glad your into it again Ian....sorry i didnt make it this morning, the flight was early...and the plan went out the window.....catch up soon.

Hey Marty. ASC is fine if it's configured properly - which it usually isn't. I would not use it's defragger: it's not nearly as good as MyDefrag. The only thing I use ASC for is all the stuff under 'Maintain Windows' (as needed - might like to do Privacy Sweep only every few months), and Security Defense under Diagnose System. Note also, I switch off ALL the checkboxes under 'General Setting'. Like many progs these days, ASC can be intrusive and invasive. I make sure I have 100% control over all my progs: NO autostarts. I do my maintenance when it suits me with appropriate settings, not the 'napalm gardening' that the manufacturers always set.

The other tools I use & install on my customer's PCs are CCleaner, Spybot & MyDefrag. Again, they all need settings tweaked otherwise they make a dog's breakfast out of the system.

All fixed up But still down , I hosted a MP night before all in default DC-3s , but now - for some reason the G/card has done a funky chicken ... so its a replacement card to be , first my brain now the PCs brain , only one with a good working one is Marsbar!

Perhaps you should just get the cat to sort it all for you, Ian. They're pretty smart - when they want to be... As we all know, dogs have owners, cats have staff.
