Wireless Router recommendations please

The place to ask for help or solve each others technical issues and discuss hardware

Postby AllanJames » Mon Dec 27, 2010 7:36 am

I have a desktop computer plugged into the Telstra Clear cable using their modem in my home office. Now I wish to set up a wireless network to my games only computer in the lounge.

What do I need to get good speed / performance etc to use for multiplayer.

What router and wireless adaptor would you recommend?

Thanks

Not sure which is the best brand but I would go for a 'N' capable router and card/usb.

Hi AllanJames,

I think I can help you as I've been doing some research recently, before I bought what I've got now.

A simple and easy answer : Cisco Linksys N (WRT120N). One doesn't have to work in the IT to know, that they are one of the best, and most serious network hardware vendor around. They just decided to give it a go on the small business/home market so they came up with this. It comes with or witout a built-in ADSL modem. I bought it in DickSmith.

IMHO you should avoid Belkin routers, they are low-level, and heir firmware is cr@p, too. The support guys were very helpful and friendly, but couldn't solve the problem so I had to send it back...2 times....

If my understanding is correct, you don't need an ADSL modem as you already have one....If you do, just buy the one which has it built in.

Hey! Thanks for the feedback guys!

I notice both you recommend N series gear. is that high speed necessary? Reason I ask is I've been attracted to this unit on cost grounds -
Ascent Technology, TP-Link TL-WR740N, Wireless Router, 150Mbps, 802.11b/g/n, Ethernet, with USB adapter $98.29 << nice combo of router and adaptor.

But, if N series (500Mbps) is essential, I'll go shopping again.
