My basic set-up is as follows:

Windows XP
Gigabyte GA-P35-DS4 LGA775 Motherboard
Intel Core 2 Duo E6850 CPU 3.0GB
4GB DDR2 RAM
C Drive - 500GB Usable Hard Drive Capacity (65GB free with FS9 49GB and FSX 109GB)
Nvidia GeForce GTX 285 IGB Memory
700W PSU

Set up performs fine, though recently I have been getting the odd on-screen WARNING advising that my memory capacity is limited.... though these warnings don't seem to affect performance....I have just been ignoring them!!

My Motherboard supports 8GB DDR2 RAM so I am wondering if I should install a further 4GB's???

You will be wasting RAM since you are running XP , 4 GB is the maximum .

Is the problem that it's XP or that it's a 32bit OS ? Can't remember from when I first upgraded to win7 but I think win7 32bit has the same problem ? I ended up on win7 64bit which just works ...

@Redda Do you only get this in FS9/FSX? If so, it could be the dreaded OOM (Out Of Memory) error that's plagued FS for years. Do a Google for it. I used to get it all the time, then followed a set of tweaks that seemed to cure it.

I also upgraded to Win7 x64 ... and that will have helped as well. Looking at your specs, I think it'd be worth considering Win7. Buy another HD and put it on that. That way you can always go back to your XP system.

Whilst I've been *very* critical of MS operating systems in the past (particularly Win-Me and Vista), Win7 is a beaut. It just *works* - which is essentially what any decent o/s should do!

Thank's for your response.....yes the OOM error (which is what I have been experiencing) only happens in FS9 or FSX.....will let you know how I get on with the tweaks....and will give Win7 some thought!!

Cheers,

There's also a good online .cfg editor around, but I appear to have lost the URL for that!

The dreaded OOM error normally isn't about running out of actual memory, it's about running out of memory addresses. Everything that the computer knows about has to be filed somewhere in memory - that's every polygon and the physics that goes with it, every variable and every line of code, plus windows, plus whatever else you're running in the background ... Don't worry about how much room it takes up, just consider how many addresses are needed to keep track of it all.

Then throw a few complex add-ons into the mix, and some traffic, and some decent scenery with bits that move, the number of addresses needed goes through the roof.

While it's certainly nice to be able to make use of extra physical memory, the main benefit of moving to a 64 bit OS is that it can handle far far far more memory addresses. While adding more ram to a 64bit system never hurts you'll likely find that simply upgrading to win7 64bit solves the OOM crashes.

Yeah this is the one that also sorted my OOM errors, was plagued with them for weeks a few months back, ran that config tweaker and no worries since.

It's basically a GUI for applying Jesus Altuve's config tweaks:

fsl-texturefix-v11-zip
disappearing-textures-fix-for-fsx

It's really ggod!
