FSX crashes mid flight

Hi all
Have just built what i thought was the ultimate machine (well close anyway ) Windows 7 64 bit

Mid flight FSX crashes, no warning Gives a quick message and restarts.

Can't quite remember the message but very unhelpful (like me).

Something like must close and restart at this time.



Have completed a couple of flights. Very random but annoying.


Any ideas? fixes or same issue?

Is it when you use the FSX menus? Right click, change view etc?
Also is it with any AC or only some?

There could be quite a number of reasons for the crash - video drivers would be the first place to start. If you've currently got the latest (for whichever card you have - presumably nVidia?) you could try going back 1 version of the drivers. Next, what AV are you running? As much as it may be worrisome, you can try switching off your AV whilst flying (which, bar a heightened exposure to nasties on the net, is something quite a few do anyway to improve performance), and try that a few times to see wot the story is. Even though your machine is brand new, there is the possibility that you could have a small glitch on the hard drive or one of the RAM chips. My advice (in addition to the other steps, and regardless of what the other steps turn up) is to run a 5-pass of MemTest (have 2 create a CD & boot from that - use version 4.2) for the RAM, and then download the standalone tester for whichever hard drive you have. You can also download the excellent (free) Ultimate Boot CD which has testing programs for all the main HDD manufacturers. The current DOS-based version of UBCD is 5.0.3 I think. It is available as a free ISO to burn to CD - boot to that. Just make sure that whatever test you run is NON-DESTRUCTIVE! The Western Digital HDD tester has a short and long version - run the long one - tests every sector on a drive.

While there is much (deserved) debate about Registry cleaners, I personally think they provide (on balance) more positives than negatives and would run one or two over your system if it were mine. The free ones I use and trust are: Glary Utilities (just use the basic 1-click maintenance button) and TweakNow Registry Cleaner 2011 (go to Windows Cleaner tab, click Registry Cleaner, run the Full (expert) mode - if you get any blue-coloured entries, after you've cleaned all the safe ones, run a deep scan to check the blue ones)

What are your computer specs and what were you running at the time? FSX i take it? Any add ons?

I occasionally get the same problem and it is normally one of my MANY add ons. Sometimes it is the weather program, others it is the Auto Pirep program i run.

I am about to take the plunge and upgrade yet again. I am currently running Core 2 Duo 3.0 with 4 Gig of Ram and am waiting on the arrival of an i7 3.4 with 16Gb Ram. Hopefully that will allow me to run FSX with everything close to max.

This is a known issue for some windows7 users and there has been alot of discussion about it. Some seem to think a certain .dll file causes it. Go to the link below and scroll down. My system always crashs on long haul flights when I go into or out of full screen mode. For others, heavy use of menus while in flight causes a CTD.

So from that thread it's clear that the culprit is .NET Framework related. That being the case, make sure that the PC has .NET 4 installed PLUS all the updates. I've seen it time and again that people don't have .NET 4 installed, or an update missing (as one or 2 of the .NET updates are optional). So, IF the culprit is indeed something to do with .NET, making sure it's actually installed & updated would be a good thing to do also. Deleting DLLs is very much a last resort thing - like taking out one kidney and hoping you can just live ok on the other...

I was also having a crash to desktop issue with FSX and Windows 7. It happened when I was into a flight and clicked on the menus. I did some searching and some users did have this problem. It appears the problem is the UIautomation.dll in your /windows/system32 folder.

The solution is to replace UIautomation.dll with the vista version.

Now the hardest part of this fix is replacing the windows 7 UIautomation.dll with the vista version. Windows 7 locks the system32 folder from the users.
You need to take ownership of the file.

Be warned - You can screw up your computer and don't blame me if you do...

Instructions:
1) Downlaod the file at http://www.mediafire.com/file/mik2ml...mationCore.zip and unzip it - This file was uploaded by someone else.
2) BACKUP the current UIautomation.dll located in your windows/system32 folder. Usually located at c:\windows\system32
3) Click on your start menu and type cmd in your search menu.
4) Now a command prompt should pop up. Type takeown /f C:\Windows\System32\UIautomation.dll
5) Next type cacls C:\Windows\System32\UIAutomationCore.dll /G YOUR_USERNAME:F - replace YOUR_USERNAME with your windows 7 username.
6) You can now copy the UIautomation.dll into your windows 7 folder.

I did this a couple of days ago with no adverse effects.

Do what Mike has suggested. Also grab the latest version of FSUIPC- it has some fix in it for crashing.

If still no go, are you using the HDR Enbseries? Delete the d3d9.dll (this is one of the files you place when you install the ENBseries plugin) from the FSX root folder and try again
