Gurus .... Ive found a 64bit OEM of WIN7 home premium on mighty ape for $179. is that a good price ? Ive also been studying the dummies guide to installing it over XP , and i reckon i can manage.

All my sim stuff including FSX is living on external hard drives , i think i need to upgrade soon as support , and even software, for xp seems to be disappearing fast.

You may get away with it.
Changing from 32 to 64 bit may confuse a few things.
I would be doing a format & fresh install.
That way you have a good dung out.
Either way you will still have to re-install some programs.

My FSX runs in Win7 x64, as does my FS 9.1 Classic. The Classic install runs in Win XP SP3 compatibility mode, which something Win7 lets you choose.
Whatever you do, do not install either your FSX or your FS9 to C:\Program Files\ whatever. The Win7 security nuisance will cause you all sorts of grief.
I have mine in C:\FS10\ and C:\FS Classic.. That way, the files that FS updates each time you use it, are outside PF and so the Win7 UAC does not see them as system files, so UAC actually allows you to update those files on your own 'poota. UAC = User Access Control...I don't remember authorising MS to decide what files I should be allowed to update on my own computer angry.gif
Apart from that sort of nonsense, I have found Win7 to be a good stable platform, as XP was. To Vista, I never went.
One thing I have found is that Win7 seems to make a complete dog's breakfast of storing files. It is a good idea to defrag before doing any big flying, or after d/l and install new planes, scenery, etc..
I use a free app from auslogics:
http://www.auslogics.com/en/software/disk-defrag/
It is quick and effective, as far as I am concerned. Never mind the "improve your 'poota ' " stuff - just instal the defragger.
Hope this helps

Best advice is to turn the UAC off so it doesn't give you any trouble!
Start > control panel > user accounts > Change user account settings > move the slider to never notify.

Definitely a good Idea to do this though Marty, as it'll never bother you again!

Sure does, thanks Mike. I have to upgrade from XP at some stage, so I'm watching this thread (and your progress Marty) with interest!

Even better advice is to completely bypass the "c:\program files" trees, then you don't have to worry about turning it off and it can carry on looking after the system directories. Everything I install goes off of a folder I made called c:\prog (e.g. c:\prog\fsx) and as it's not a recognised system location UAC isn't interested in what goes on there - I can't remember the last time I heard from UAC unexpectedly, and I've never had a problem with UAC not letting things update their data files.

Ok, as I work in I.T I feel I have a responsibility to raise the "upgrade" issue with XP to Windows 7. I do not recommend carrying out an upgrade rather a full install of Windows 7 after backing up all your data first. You will no doubt encounter some issues by upgrading especially if the architecture is different. If you are in Auckland then I may be able to provide some help to you.

Marty's only around the corner here so to speak, thought one person regard to the software install and away you go is just over the fence - a teacher in computer science , Greg winkyy.gif
