It would seem that the 4770K CPU was not really much of a tock (at least for desktop computers). Too much heat for a good overclock and it seems the degree of overclock is very dependent on the CPU being from a good batch.
I was all set to go with this but now I'm not so sure. Is anyone aware of anything better on the near horizon?

I was looking at getting this too but now you have me wondering. Im using P3D V2 now so there is not so much dependency on the CPU so I may go for the 3770 or similar, alot cheaper too probably.

I agree with you but who knows what is coming down the track with P3D as well as the fact that I run a lot of background programs in addition to the basic sim so the CPU cycles are still important to me.
I know one could die of old age before finally putting a stake in the ground and locking in a configurationbut I was really hoping that the Haswell would deliver and it hasn't really. I was at least hoping that Intel would bring out a performance version that nailed the production issues so that the thing was at least guaranteed to be overclockable. It's hard to believe that even with the very latest state of the art components the sliders still have to be pegged!
It will be interesting how the various rigs cope with version 2.1. I will wait and see. I'd prefer to do it once and do it right.

With the lower use of the CPU , I wonder how it compares to the early days of FSX , dependent on PC .. it worked superbly on the PC 8 years back when released .. SP1/2 come into the fold then with acceleration .. and further closed the door regard to frame rate and smooothest ! ... P3D may have returned the limits then .

You can always get the i5 4670 k i think it is, it doesnt have HT. The 4770k is a lottery, mines stable at 4.2 yet others have 4.5 with less volts, than there is teh glue on HS issue, requires delidding to get temps down, which i am not willing to do. Wonder whats next now they really dont have any competition??
Intel 4790K 4.6Gig
8 Gig 1600 Meg ram,
Gigabyte GTX 680 2 Gig Ram
Gigabyte GAZ87X-UD3H

I cant find anything on the net about the next processors but the reviews I read on the 4770 and 4820 seem to say they are still the better processor to go for, however there are the issues you mentioned. Fingers crossed we can run V2.1 really well with a non over clocked 4770 and a really good GPU.

Good point, $140 cheaper too that I can put into a GPU.

Try disabling HT in the BIOS to possibly get a better overclock (if you dont have other applications that need it).
