Loading add ons onto FSX Steam

Hi folks,
First thank you so much for what you are doing for the flight sim community, it is fantastic and much appreciated by this antipodean geriatric and amateur flight simmer.

I have a lot of great scenery and aircraft add ons (Flight 1, Carenado, A2A etc) and dearly want to get going on Steam FSX but can’t find the directory to load them (although Steam FSX does load up and run).

The instructions for add ons are quite simple, to go the following directory to do so

Program Files/Steam/ (x86) SteamApps/common/FSX

First is that I have a 32 bit system so would not get the (X86) so I go on to Steam/SteamApps/common. But there is NO FSX folder in that Common folder.

In that folder however I have loaded the Carenado B200, Flight 1 B200 and the A2A C172. But when I load FSX Steam, the aircraft don’t show up on the options, just get the generic aircraft.

Can you advise why I haven’t got an FSX folder in the common folder and how I can get my aircraft (and ORBX scenery) on to Steam FSX.

Really appreciate any advice

Harold :(

Not all addons are FSX Steam compatible yet, there are a few that are. ORBX are updating to be FSSE and PMDG are doing the same, Just Flight are also moving there and each one is posting update patches etc for their products. It's going to be a slow process I'm afraid, Some items can be done manually, others you will just have to wait...

There could be several things going on here:

- did you have FSX installed previously (or still installed)? This could mean that some installers are not finding and using the Steam Edition path when they try to install. You could try something like Crap Cleaner to tidy your Registry of old entries. It is also possible to manually remove the old Registry keys if you (Google) know what to look for and use RegEdit (carefully). I gather that uninstalled an old FSX installation after you install FSX SE won't stop things from going to the original FSX locations.

- You need to get into Steam and look at the FSX SE entry Properties to see where it's installed so you can get the correct path maybe under Local Files. You can also go into Steam Settings | Downloads to see where Steam installs things. Once you have the correct path you'll be able to find the installation folder and can check whether things really are installing into the right place - and give the installers the right path. Note I've seen things that say you should have an FSXSE folder, but I have an FSX folder so the naming might not be consistent. One more thing, not all Steam games are installed under common, check the other folders - perhaps the one with your steam username.

- Many add ons are being updated to include SE installers. Check each of your add ons for updates. I have a bunch of ORBX and A2A stuff and they all install into FSXSE just fine.

Hope this helps a bit.

Hi - thanks for the welcome - just trying to help as I've been going through some of the SE learning curve of late. (EZdok is my latest head banging exercise - but cracked it last night).

EZdok is one camera tool I got years back and never used , It was always a mission to get that running , silly registration and key reply , I gave up after a whiles , I should dig it up and have another crack at it .

Just a progress report, many thanks, I have found the steam FSX folder in
c:\program files\steam\2013\steamapps\common\fsx.

amazing but that is where it is. I loaded the Carenado B200 and it is working, the A2A C172 not yet but I will work on that.

I tried to load some orbx scenery and it did not give me the option to put it into steam but automatically went to FSX ?

Also I am trying to load my Saitek drivers into steam (I am so used to using all the boxes I cant fly now with the keyboard and mouse !!P). But once again no options to change destination folders.

would you folk have any thoughts on that .
sorry for the niff naff questions, but really appreciate your time taken to response
kind regards

Harold

As I said

Not sure why this is, but some addons have compatibility issues and we just need to wait on the devs to fix it or basically DIY. You'd think they would be the same given it's the same game, but whatever Dovetail have done in getting it ready for Steam has caused issues...

When people say "Steam compatible" I think it's mostly installers that want to point to MS FSX.

Mostly, but there is some addons (I forget which at the mo) that actually just don't work at all in FSXSE

A thought, I brought 'Steam Edition' .. well we all did at $5US bucks, I should actually install it on one my other HDs and test what can be used and or how to transfer aircraft , I have a feeling Scenery will simply just plop in.

That's not a bad idea Ian. A list of what will and won't install without assistance or what won't work at all just now would be good, esp for people new to the scene

One off the biggest questions and I serious don't understand it .. people don't like 'Steam' ?

I have several Steam games. I don't see anything wrong with it, works fine.

Samo samo , "BOB Cliff over Dover" not an issue , I do wonder why people complain yet really don't put any positive input into it .. I'll get onto sorting out a 'Steam' spot this weekend.

I am still getting organised with Steam, but initial impressions are this is magnificent, and the multiplayer is also tops.
Dovetail getting involved has revitalised the FS community and the article by Saitek in the latest PC Pilot magazine confirms that, even the hardware folks are getting back on board.
all I got to do now is get my Saitek cockpit boxes to work with it and good to go. Also need to get my NI and SI Orbx scenery plus the 8 discs of UK scenery loaded. Once that is done , that will be my prime game site.

I still use a server in the UK for multiplayer with my son on boxed FSX and that works well (they have the Europe scenery which is nice.)

what servers are based in NZ for multiplayer if any ?

That would be another interesting test , I still down have 'FSX Steam' installed , but the both should work together.

I know first-hand that the 172 will load into Steam.

If you have *one* version of FSX installed it'll install there. It's when you have the original FSX and Steam editions installed concurrently that you get problems.

You're not going to install such things "into" Steam. Steam is just a game launcher, so install/configure/use your controllers as you would with any other game and/or original FSX.
