Dumb question , and i could check ... but i prefer to tap the collective forum knowledge base.
So , are there monitors capable of displaying more than the standard 1920 by whatever it is ?
The reason i ask is that my graphics card (GTX 750) is capable of much more (so it tells me) but my monitor , a ViewSonic VA2231wm maxes out at the default 1920 thing.

Some sims give a lot of resolution options , that i cant get past.

As you know I have been using 3 monitors for several years with mine the resolution maxes out three monitors at 5760 x 1080 which is 1920 x 1080 each monitor if that's any help to you.

Thank you gents ..... now Im really confused .
I just wanted to tighten up the resolution on my screenshots .... seems odd that a card that can render 5760 x 1080 (in Dougs case) cant translate that via a monitor.

1920x1080, which is what is normally referred to as 1080p. Before then the 'standard' was 720p, and before that was 480. There are in fact other resolutions available, but there are good reasons for sticking with the industry-standards.

By the way, a LCD monitor has a 'native' resolution, where 1 pixel = 1 actual LCD 'light'. Back in the old days, CRTs had variable resolutions, but with LCDs it is always going to be best to set the display to the native resolution. Setting your resolution to anything greater isn't going to work, as there is a fixed number of pixels on your monitor, and you'll lose any benefit of a higher resolution.

These days there's a shift to 4K, which is sometimes called 2160p, which is twice 1080. One day most of us will have 4k monitors, as the industry has been pretty keen to get on with it. If you wanted a much bigger monitor, then 4K would make sense. Personally I'm waiting for 4K OLEDs to go mainstream, and become a reasonable price.

Marty, I'm in a somewhat similar situation. I would like a more powerful GPU, but the power supply unit in the current flying machine does not provide the additional 6-pin outputs needed for the card I want.
Can't really justify buying yet another machine, just to make FSX work...

took wife and daughter to botany day after boxing day so they could buy a pair of shoes and got roped into driving them.
They came home with said pair of shoes...

I came home with 50" 4k UHD Panasonic TV. Haven't tried FS yet but connected to the brand new i7 monster with the GF970...
well lets just say that Napoleonic Total war zoomed right in to unit level is just like being on the field at Waterloo - especially with the surround sound turned up to
a cannon roaring level.

How dose the wifey and daughter handle the sudden 'BANG' every couple of minutes as you take a bunch of 'Blue Coats' out , I can imagine the neighbourhood peering outside thinking some boy racer is having problems with his car

don't know about the banging of the cannons - but I'm sure the sudden blaring of bugles and the sound of the charging horses in the middle of
the night in the suburbs must have some of them looking out the windows.

That would be funny ... brother did the same with the 'Kiwi Red' team, I filmed the group , a borrowed VHS video camera with a wicked sound recorder , 1987 Singapore - Christchurch airshow , bro had wicked stereo connected to the TV and that was no slouch either .. the flat setting was more 'U' shaped .. Al put the speakers outside then time to press the play button .... now that was was a reaction worth filming , you had to see the looks on peoples faces and the craning necks as this 'Kiwi Red' team flew over head but was not there - they all go inside - then did it again .... One neighbour cottoned on after the third go at it ... BLOODY FUNNY !
