Hi all,

As you may have seen I am looking at building a new PC for P3D V3. I am tossing up between an i7-6700 or the i7-6700K.

In the past I know O/C'ing was a risky business. The heat and instability issues were the main drawbacks. However, I have heard that the benefits in terms of performance are huge.

Question is: how hard is it to do? Is it worthwhile? Or would the 4.0GHz factory speed of the 6700K (versus the factory 3.6GHz of the 6700) be adequate?

Scotty, I simply would not Overclock , no point cooking a computer unless your are made of money which I was but still never overclocked a PC .. with FSX or the other ,P3D the program they have there limits.

I have never risked over-clocking anything, processor or video card, in any of my different computers over the years!

If I'm not happy with my current Processor/Video card, I purchase a faster one, and not overclock it.

I always leave everything as pre-set by the Manufacturers, and assume that they know what they are doing!!

Despite those old codgers giving it the thumbs down I would do a little more research and give it a crack.

You've got a K model CPU that is easily over-clockable and there are plenty of guides out there. I have an i5/2500K with native clock speed of 3.3GHz which I run at 4.1GHz. I started with 4.3 but it wasn't stable enough and temps were too high. At 4.1 things have been rock-solid for over 2 years now. It's a significant performance increase for the old FSX beast and if your not too greedy is a risk worth taking IMHO.

Having said that the clock-speed is already pretty good on your CPU so may not be worth the time. For me, it's definately worth it until I save up a few hundy for an upgrade. My rig runs sweet though at the moment, even better since the switch to P3D.

OLD Codger "CLASSIC" .. run your home PC everyday in temps from around 8.00am to maybe 10.00/12.00 pm running a demanding program something has to give. graphics and design really whines a PC up .. get FS going it clicks into another notch .

We Wise Old Codgers have spent a lifetime learning how NOT do daft things.... ....

Overclocking, dating and marriage and breeding (Ian), going too fast, going outside in cold weather, etc....!

Its our infinite wisdom which keeps us, and our "equipment", safe from harm!
