FSX -- how do people manage TEXTURE_MAX_LOAD?

It's been a long time since I used FSX, but since I've finally got a FSX installer for NZCH, I really want to know what to do about texture size -- since this was originally designed for Prepar3d, most of the textures are 2048x, but of course FSX doesn't deal with these without a cfg tweak. How many people use this tweak? Is there any way to automate it so you don't reset every time you change the graphics settings?
I can either leave the textures as they are (and rely on mipmaps for those restricted to 1024x) or offer a choice of the original 2048 set or reduced to 1024.
Hopefully there are still a few FSX users who won't jump to MFS, otherwise I've wasted the last month:)

Gi'day Robin,

(When I have FSX installed) mine is normally set at the default 1024, but ... the "choice" option would be nice. As Kosta says: "no harm done" if TML is set higher.

In my experience some addons "require" a setting of 2048. I haven't experienced any FPS drop with it.
