Is this possible?

The place to ask for help or solve each others technical issues and discuss hardware

Postby ardypilot » Fri Sep 08, 2006 2:37 pm

After I realised that my computer really is an old piece of junk, I have decided that I need to upgrade to a new system.

At the moment I am running a 2.4ghz Intel with 1.5GB Ram and 200GB of HDD.

Want I want to do is buy a new mobo, power supply and processor, at least at 3ghz speed, and if possible, just take the RAM out of this system and put it on the new mobo, along with my current GFX card and HDD's. Then take my DVD drive, Floppy Drive, Modem etc and bung it all in a new case together.

Is this possible?

Will I have to wipe my harddrives and re-install windows? I have Windows XP installed on my primary 80GB hdd and Flightsim 04 (which I really don't want to re-install again) on a separate secondary 120GB HDD.

I would also like to know how much this will all cost, money is not really an issue.

Any help/tips/pointers would be much appreciated.

P.S. I want to buy brand new hardware that comes with a warranty, no second hand stuff.

you can take HDDs (but you'll have to re-install windows, preferably from scratch), DVD, floppy and modem.

but you more than likely will have to ditch the memory. new motherboards take DDR2 memory, and your memory is likely to be DDR- the slots are different.
you can buy motherboards with AGP slots, but my advice is don't- it will severely limit your upgrade options in the future.

as for price, its best if you set a budget. that way we can work towards it, rather than me picking out parts from everywhere. ~$1200 could get you a nice system but more is always better :D

Hey Trolly. I've found out the same thing in my thread. Just upgraded so I have 1.5 gig of memory in the old puter, and now I have to get a whole new system. So gotta ditch the old memory. Oh well. The price we pay for speed.
