FSX broke my computer

The place to ask for help or solve each others technical issues and discuss hardware

Postby 2fst4u » Sun May 10, 2009 4:26 pm

sooo... I was playing FSX and both my screens made wierd red vertical lines (not one screen was at fault so I assumed graphics card was at fault). Computer decided to freeze and then wouldnt show stuff properly (POST was all wierd and then OS was balck). I have a dell dimension E520 (graphics: nvidia 7300le (super awesome!)). My uncle came around and found a cap covereing the onboard graphics port (I didnt think there was any so glad he came around). Right now im running on board graphics and in desperate need of a new graphics card. Any suggestions? I'd like to think big but keep in mind, the PSU does not have a cable for external graphics power sad.gif I was thinking maybe an 8600gt would be ok. would this be a good choice?

I have run a Nvidia Geforce 8600GT for a couple of years now and have been very happy with it.....BUT, I am on FS9 so you'll need further input.

Good luck...

true. fsx would be more intensive. but it relies more on the cpu anyway doesnt it? what amount of input (read output if we want to be technical) does the gpu have on fsx compared to the cpu?

I have just purchased an EN9500GT Magic with 512MB and it has no external graphics power point I have had a run with FSX on it but not really checked it out properly yet.
I have put it in a Gaming PC that I built about a year ago but have just finished building another gaming PC so the one I have just put the new EN9500GT in will be for sale if anyone is interested.
The reason for putting the new graphics card in it was that I put the EN9800GTX that was in it in the new one I have just finished building.
If anyone is interested in buying the one for sale I will put the specs of it on here for you.

Would you be selling the complete PC - or just the graphics card? How would the 9500GT stack up against my 8800GTS, do you think?

As it sounds like FSX performance is more about CPU than GPU, how well did it run on the machine you're selling ?

What sort of price were you looking for ?

Cheers
G.

Hi Adamski here are some specifications of the two.
Your GeForce 8800 GTS would be the best of the two.

Core Clock (MHz) Shader Clock (MHz) Memory Clock (MHz) Memory Amount Memory Interface

GeForce 8800 GTS 650 1625 970 512MB 256-bit

GeForce 9500 GT 550 1375 800 512MB 128-bit

Hah! Nothing ... yet!! I thought maybe the 9500 would be a higher spec (well, it's a higher number, innit? laugh.gif).

I've been plagued with GFX issues in FSX (black screens, corruption etc.) and was wondering whether the 8800 was up to it - or even whether an ATI card would fix it.

Thanks for the warning. All the ATI cards I've ever had in the past have had real driver issues, so I've been leery of them ever since. Mind you, this was way before the latest Radeon cards winkyy.gif

i dont understand ATIs numbering system anyway. at least i know what 8600gt means. and what 8800gt means. likewise 7300 le. the le stands for Largly [usless] electronics. so if there are no objections to me buying an 8600gt then i shall go ahead...
