I'm a bit confused... is this a new version that we'll have to buy or an update?

Nick, that chap who says this is "confirmation of Aerofly FS3 coming soon" is not an IPACS Team member, and "FS3" is a figment of his imagination.
IPACS development has been focused on creating a common platform for all versions - PC, Mobile, and Mac. I believe a Linux version is not far away either.
I think this will be the fourth major update for AFS2. The others were free downloads. Some of the addon DLC has been payware.

I'll get it when it's ready.

It's kind of a confusing post but the screenshots make it look like the sim is moving in the right direction. Thanks for the heads up.

Thanks for posting, Mike.
They do operate in their own little bubble, IPACS, don't they?
Fun to dip in there from time to time, although I see I have forgotten all the shortcuts that made the sim workable :(

Yes Charl, they just stick to their own plan, ignoring all the professional complainers (who of course are out in force already).

Two official posts from IPACS, in the forum this morning:

"The next major version for PC will most likely be called Aerofly FS 4 and it will be a separate program. Price and release date are not set yet.
Aerofly FS 2 will stay and you can continue to use it of course."

and:

"It's not an update for the existing Aerofly FS 2, it's going to be a new program that you can purchase and install separately."

I find that very disappointing :( but like many of you I have several versions of the Microsoft product, so nothing has really changed. I hope backward compatibility will not be a big issue.

Imagine if AFS4 embraced all the user feedback gained through the previous release!
I'd buy it if they made the camera work.
It's always been a puzzle to me, a sim whose beauty is its best (only?) feature, and you need machine code to take a screenshot.
