I expect they were making there way up to Whenuapi for the show?

It's a great noise, hearing fighter jets over your house isn't it? I remember hearing them back in England but only get the whir of the Rolls Royce airliner engines these days... look forward to hearing the 111's tomorrow!

Oh True- That is likely it.

They are great sounding a/c too....a very powerful sounding pair of engines. Ive seen their party trick called 'lighting the candle' too so hopefully theyll pull that one out tomorrow.

Right might go and play some online FSX

Both of these F111, come right over the top of my house (yesterday and today), even with the landing gear down and full flaps these things make a hell of a lot of noise... love it!!

from WK they came up around the gulf and across to the west coast followed by an Echelon right ILS 05R at NZAA with a low approach and overshoot and 500ft left turn throught the city sector for a high speed buzz and break rejoin at WP!

how do I know - I was on duty and cleared/watched them right past the tower windows ! great sight and great sound - damn I wish I had a camera permanently at work!

F111s are quite quick at crossing the Tasman, they can do it in just over an hour. They also have the most comfortable seats from what I've heard.

I think they only brought them to the airshow because they do training in NZ with terrain, because in aussie they dont have terrain we have here. Thats why they brought so many of them over. I saw people were asking questions about them.

Thats why the sometimes come here.

Yep thats right Brennanx...

They come here for terrain and training in 'different' weather :P They leave from Brisbane, fly over here, do their exercises and go back to oz without even touching down... Occasionally they do a touch and go and then head back. Crossing time across the Tasman is usually around 1.5 hours!

This from one of the support crew that I spoke to at Ohakea :)

Yeah certainly is a short trip for an F111 as opposed to A4s which required refuelling to cross from NZ to Aussie. Last time I saw F111s and Hornets in NZ I had the opportunity to watch them drop bombs which was quite cool. The Hornets are quite awesome flying low level.

Sorry no photos as I was helping them spoil the country side :D . This was in Waiouru in 1996 or 97 during an exercise and I just happened to be passing through there as usual without a camera doh!

In the Gulf war its rumored that an F111 brought down a Mig29 by flying too low and kicking up stones into its intake while it was getting chased. IMO the lowest flying I've ever seen is by RNZAF Skyhawk pilots they actually can fly lower than Aussies in NZ.
