Fastest Speeds?

Left New York JFK last night on a KLM 777-200 bound for Amsterdam AMS. The usual unpleasant and excessive security checks in the US, got treated like a criminal and a 3 year old, so it was good to get out of the US. Had some amazing tail winds all the way and saw that the GROUND speed reached 1112km/h. This was a new record for me, and it got me wondering just how fast some other NZFF members have been? Plane arrived 1 hour and 25 mins early, which on an 8 hour flight was quite something. It looked like the pilot slowed down so as not to arrive at AMS before 0600. I wonder if the pilot got any blurries due to the high speeds!!! :D

Off tomorrow from AMS to AKL, so hoping that the 250km/h winds continue, as an early arrival into AKL would be very welcome.

So what is the fastest that you have been?

smooth landings (into wind).

forgot to ask.........

I remember before several years ago that United had a channel on the inflight entertainment where you could watch the pilots view, great for landings and take offs. Anybody know of any airlines that are currently doing this?

Saw over 1100km/h on a Qantas 744 FAJS-YSSY.
Wish I could remember the exact speed so I could top yours, somewhere I have a video of the inflight map.
I remember the pilot announcing they'd been given clearance to climb and find the jetstream.
It caused consternation in Sydney, 2 hours early.
(Edited, I had it to Auckland but the flight terminated in Sydney)
But the fastest thing I ever witnessed was on a US coast to coast.
Because of the reduced vertical separation, you can easily see traffic going in the opposite direction, but you have to be sharp.
I happened to look out at the exact moment a 737 came by; relative speed probably 1,700 km/h.
It looks like a speeded-up movie.
As to the inflight views, things went a bit quiet after expensive counselling was required for that United(?) flight where everyone on board could see via live TV, their own aircraft's nosewheel fire...

Jetblue A320 wasn't it? Oh and I think I saw about 1000km/h on the 777 from KUL-FCO.

Crickey I haven't been on enough international flights to notice some really fast speeds. :( Had 240kts gs in me wee C185 once though :P

Hmmm I have no idea, never really payed that much attention to an inflight map. However, it once took me 36 hours to get from Auckland to London, stopping off at Bali, Jakarta and then Frankfurt on the way with Gaurda! <_<

I saw something simular flying Easyjet from Barcelona to London, another Easyjet 737 whizzing along in the opposite direction. I tried to take a photo but it was well gone by the time I had gotten my camera out.

Out of a plane 230kph approx :drool:

Couldnt say with regards to powered a/c, but have had around the low-mid 200kts gs descending out of wave while dumping water ballast in both an LS-4 and a Janus. (gliders, if you hadnt guessed) :thumbup: also while tooling around up there over the leading edge of the primary wave at about 15k, whenever I made a slow turn into the wind the GPS was showing 0 to -20kt gs :blink:

210kts G/S in a mighty C172 heading into NP from NS.....

About 415 knots 100ft above Kaingaroa Forest in a Strikemaster.
405 knots at 200 ft agl in an Orion.

I have gone a lot faster in the 727 and Commercial jets at higher altitude, but you just don't notice the speed up high.

Me and Dad clocked 270 Kts in a 172 coming back from Stratford, I love strong tail winds :wub:

That wind would have to be rather over 100kts :o Don't think you would see mwa in a 172 in that :wacko:

That would give you atleast a 110kt tailwind, while maintaining a 160 kt descent, VNE in a 172 is 163kts, I can imagine that with 110kts of wind around stratford it wouldnt be smooth, so would be rather sitting on VNE in those conditions, are you sure its not 170kts?

Yeap im pretty sure, The GPS showed 267 Kts GS, It is bloody fast I know, It was leaving a small airshow/flyin at Stratford i remember Dad joking about it with another pilot on the Radio.
ill ask Dad when he gets home, this was a few years back...

Hmm Stratford my old home town! - I have flown from the Aerodrome heaps of times with my dad many years ago in various Cessnas and Pipers back when Stratford Aero Club had proper aeroplanes.

I got my C152 up to 175knots once when coming down the Wairau river towards Blenheim...and that was with power right off as I had the mother of all tail winds! :D
