Accident up north...

My Dad took this pic near Paihia on Jan 2nd or 3rd while taking some Scottish friends on a bit of a Tiki Tour over the holidays...

Anyone hear anything about this?

Oh no, that's the infamous yellow submarine, that's gotta have one of the most checkered pasts of any Cessna in the country! Looks like it has probably nosed over - forced landing perhaps?

Seems to be a few happening at the moment. Must be because more people out there doing it at this time of year with holidays and such.

I reckon the story here about the helicopter taking off on it's own would cause a few anxious moments.

Maybe the one in your pic was idling with no brakes and went off on it's own? But I'm with Flying Kiwi - my vote goes for a probable nose over.

I assume this relates to the fact that it was supposedly destroyed when ditched in the sea back in '04... story I heard was that it magically re-appeared in 'tiny pieces' in a shipping container a couple of years later...

And looking at the damage to the leading edge near the starboard wing, I would have to agree that it looks like it has nosed over...

Yeah I saw that report when looking at the weekly accident reports on the CAA website... seems to be a LARGE number of helo's...

Ahh yes the yellow submarine. That does infact have a history. Yes was supposidly ditched of timaru coast to be found in a shipping container as ashburton (fuse & wings) several months later, was operated in antartica apparently and the ship which had all its log books/docs etc etc apparently sunk... when It came out of the caontainer in ashburton and wings put on it went up as part of jim livers fleet of wrecks (where is still now) and on the way up had a rather nasty engine failure...
Thats all i know from my head anyway.

I wonder what happened to it, if it did nose over it wouldnt rip the engine off (well shouldnt), wait and see I spose... The location is interesting...

Yeah I agree,

Doesn't look like the prop was spinning on impact. Engine failure with a quick stop, maybe ground loop with the damage to the right tip, dug in and nosed over?

It looks like the bottom of the cowling has been damaged, so I wondered whether the engine wasn't necessarily torn off in the accident but suffered some damage to the underside and they then removed it subsequently? Bit hard to tell from the photo I suppose.

I see from the Aircraft Register its currently owned by Bay of Islands Skydive Centre
