I recall seeing the original along time ago , I'm sure i have a photo of the pilot 'Paul Matz' beside his aircraft with a list of achievements , from i remember a P-51B .

I've got both on DVD, in the end they used about five seconds of the Phoenix that took Paul Mantz' life, the rest was another modified warbird. Great film! Still have to read the book....and buy a C-119 kit to make a model of the 2004 Phoenix!

who flew the a/c to San Fran?
' Have you ever notice that the experts who decree that the age of the pilot is over are people who have never flown anything? In spite of the intensity of their feelings that the pilot's day is over I know of no expert who has volunteered to be a passenger in a non-piloted aircraft..'

That a trick question ? unsure.gif , I'm guessing Paul Mantz , maybe he was the engineer on the run and put his kudo's on the side of his plane , don't no enough about the man .
