I still think Harriers would suit us fine....operate from rough backcountry strips, great for ground attack but still competent A2A.....

Nah ... I agree on the Harriers ... but a handful of (ageing) *Flankers* would add the finishing touch! Or ... errmmm ... the odd Tornado!!!

If we were to resurrect a combat arm of the RNZAF..IMO..Harriers wouldn't suit...they are getting on a bit now (so are Tornadoes) now and they are no longer in production and range would be a factor...if money was no object ...F-15E Strike Eagles would be the most suitable combat aircaft for NZ...more of a budget option...F-18 Super Hornets or F-16s...

Mig 29s don't have the range. Eurofighters would be good. Hell, Gripens would be pretty damn good too - unprepared runway takeoff, reasonable range, fairly modern.
