Fake Pilot

Saw this story on the BBC news site about a Swedish man who has flown for 13 years and has over 10 000 hours without a license. Interesting how he got away with it so long. Seem to remember the Tom Hanks film "Catch Me If You Can" which had something like this in.

Guess the guy was so 'Happy' playing aeroplanes , i keep my eyes on the news tonight , be interested see if it gets attention here .

Obviously he had plenty of flying skill to pull of such a fake. In some regards its almost more impressive that he could do that without the requisite certification, than if he had gone thru the training. Also 10,000 hrs in 13 years sounds a bit exaggerated for an airline pilot IMHO.

Deane , just yappin about here , i think if proved he has not harmed and is capable , they should simply get him a job , in saying that , their is no excuse - for you newbie budding aviator s out there to try this ... me on the other hand I am .... I agree Ian, he cant do any worse than some of those we are hearing about now "drinking problems" "taking off on "taxiways" kids in the control tower....what the hell is going on with these people.....was a time when there were things called standards.......i guess its to hard to spell these days.

You know what - despite some sensationalist journalism - I actually think standards are as good, if not better than they were in days gone by. You will never eliminate "issues" so long as humans are involved. I bet there were still boozed pilots 40 or 50 years ago. Pilots could even smoke in the cockpit back then too !!
I watched closeup lastnight specifiically to see how the heck Rob Fyffe could justify the drinking. His argument and answers were outstanding and I have the utmost respect for how he handled what was potentially a media beatup.

Deane, your right....i retract that last statement......"sensationalist journalism " is all it is. Just seems to be a lot of it about at the moment.
Regarding smoking in the cockpit, i have a great pic of my father smoking (as captain) on the flight deck of a TEAL Electra.....and recalling some of his memories, i think times have changed.(for the better)
We are victims of of these 'wannabe' journos out looking for blood.

Hey no need for a full retraction. Things have changed over the years. Some standards are better now, but others are probably less so. What annoys me about journos is they have this crazy fascination with aviation and safety. We don't here about the Ferry captain or bus driver with drinking problems do we.

No we dont, thats true......i have had a bit to do with one of those industries you mentioned, and trust me.....it would be "breaking news" 24/7 if some of that stuff ever came to light. Third world procedures and attitude toward saftey....just to save a buck or two, it is a complete culture based on money and bulls**t.
I didnt last long , the Airforce made me into something those sort of people dont want to know about.....I'll stop there, otherwise i end up like Mr Warren...and Wigram.
