Whenuapai Air Force Base

A place for 'real world' pilots and aviation enthusiasts to discuss their hobby

Postby Dash8captain » Mon May 05, 2014 12:41 pm

Hello - are due to go up to Auckland later this month for a bit of annual leave etc and was wondering whether there is much to see out at Whenuapai Air Force Base, is there much air traffic out there? and is there a museum etc?

also If anyone knows of anything else aviation Related to do in Auckland apart from MOTAT or the Flight Experience Simulator it would be great!

Not usually a great deal of traffic at Whenuapai unless they are doing flight training which usually buzzes over my house. You could (If you have a car) park up at the spotters car park at the end of RW23 at AKL and do some plan watching

Ardmore would suit you possibly. Warbirds have a hanger there that they let people into. I turned up on one of their non-visitor days once but the old fella still let me in and have the run of the place. I've got a funny feeling he's passed now though unfortunately.

You maybe surprised, I stopped at MOTAT twice .. but then the Lanc/Sunderland/Solent were outside, got a full tour of the Lancaster and the Shorts, the Lanc into the turrets/bomb-aim/pilot seat - crawled over the aircraft maybe three hours, the Sunderland, If only we had today's camera's .... If you know your stuff, the aircraft history the door opens for you.

I also went to MOTOAT - was great but wasn't allowed in any aircraft - even though I asked
