Well the world is getting smaller , 13 hour flight direct is very similar to the typical to KL/HK flight .. guess it open's the doors.

That'll make it easier for me to be able to afford to visit my son, it's always been a bit of a price to fly to South America. Although he lives in Colombia, he's actually in Argentina at the moment, getting data recovered from a damaged hard-drive... He's learnt a very valuable lesson about checking that your backup protocol actually works!

Yes, but 1 year away??? This I believe is what you call a strategic announcement to possibly way lay competition. I talked to a Lan Pilot just yesterday and he stated that the route was ideal for a LAN Dreamliner but that he would always prefer to fly the A340... take what you will from that.

He wasn't a young chappie, but a long serving captain... I think he preferred 4 engines to two over such a large expanse of water..regardless of the modern ETOPS peformance allowances.

If you look at LAN Chile's fleet they have all twin engine aircraft and only 3 A340's just to serve the Auckland/Sydney route, but they are supposedly due to be replaced by 789's

Yeah they have been slowly phasing out their aging A340 fleet, they were 200 and 300 series

Think the ole saying is the Atlantic is a mill pond compared to the Pacific , we regularly get aircraft tracking over Christchurch from OZ heading to South America .... you find them with the good old human eyeball on a gorgeous day.
