Well, here is a question which I'm genuinely curious about. Even a dumbass like me can think of two possible answers so if you can't come up with anything better than "nothing" don't bother answering.

Given a situation of a Piper Cherokee buzzing around Auckland City threatening to smack into the sky tower, what could the RNZAF as it stands at the moment actually do about it ?

Cheers
Gary

What I think the article was meaning was; if for some reason private warbird fighter aircraft were operational - they would have much more chance of defending the country against an air threat than the airforce.
As said above, just tongue in cheek airforce bashing.

Still, its a good point though ... as Gary pointed out, this article is trying to say that when it 'comes to the crunch' theres not a lot the airforce can actually do about a potential threat.

Just my interpretation anyway winkyy.gif Everyone's entitled to their opinion winkyy.gif

As Ian said those arent Sidewinders but Harpoons ...it isnt a P3 either - this was the proposed P-3 replacement the P-7..check the nacelles and fin - it was canned on cost grounds - eventually the Boeing P-8 will become the P3 replacement

That was my take on it too.

Potential ? That was an ACTUAL threat and they couldn't do anything about it !!! From a Piper Cherokee for heavens sake !!!!

I have noticed that exactly none of the people who replied to this thread saying that they were sick of RNZAF bashing have been able to offer a realistic suggestion of something the RNZAF could have done to mitigate the threat posed by a miserable little Piper Cherokee. Folks, the fact that a lot of the flak the RNZAF cops for this that and the other is unjustified doesn't mean that all of it is unjustified.

If it's any consolation history suggests that having a strike wing wouldn't have helped. If you cast your minds back to 1981 there wasn't a great deal the RNZAF could do about a piddly little hired cessna 172 that was dropping flour bombs on Eden Park. Springbok Captain Wynand Claassen asked in a post-match interview "Do you not have an air force in this country?"

Maybe instead of agitating for things like "bring back the skyhawks" and "bring back the macchis" we should be petitioning John Key to reestablish 75 Squadron and equip it with Cessnas and Cherokees - they seem to do pretty well as strike aircraft tongue.gif

Well the flak is directed (almost always) at the Air Force, when it should be directed at the government.

Late last year when Wayne Mapp hinted that maybe the Macchis could make a comeback (pending the outcome of a Defence Force 'White Paper'), Key was very quick to put that idea in the trash. I was bit put out, thinking 'Well hang on, wait for the actual report to come out before you make a decision on it...'.

For the record I'm a National supporter.
