Yes Yes Yes Yes A suprise that it was Air New Zealand rather than Pacific Blue or Jetstar.

It's been a while coming, but I knew it would happen one day. Here's hoping they'll be a success - and I don't see why they won't. I wonder if it is indirect competition for Pacific Blue's new HLZ-SYD ops.

Saturdays and Mondays by the look of it. NZ977 ROT-SYD at 3.35pm arrive 5.20pm, NZ972 SYD-ROT at 12.00pm arrive 5.15pm. Not too badly priced either $192 each way plus taxes.

Oh and Naki: there's always Mount/Te Puke way.

Sounds Great. But i never knew Rotorua was a international airport. Is this the only international flight going to Rotorua?

It has never been international but over the last few years it has been trying to by extending the runway and terminal etc. The runway works are finishing in about a week that allow for transtasman operations. These will be the only flights but Pacific Blue have expressed interest and I would not be suprised if they launch something in the next few months.

Haha the guy that was on Campbell live last night, the 'landslide hero' was my workmate (I share an office with him). He has been saying that cliff was looking dodgy as in the weeks leading up to that rockfall..

Air NZ Rotorua flights bad news for Hamilton and Pacific Blue

Hamilton flights didn't work because Hamilton is harldy a destination on its own (no offence to Hamiltonians, but you have a Zoo and some Gardens and not much else), and it's not well placed to be a gateway to the central North Island. Rotorua on the other hand, has its own merits as a tourist destination and it's centrally located, making it perfect to be a gateway to the North Island skifields, Tauranga, Taupo, etc. And as for it being a blow to Pacific Blue: that's business.

I think it will be a success more like Queenstown, and hopefully it also makes other carriers (like Jetstar or Pacific Blue or even Air NZ themselves) a bit keener on Rotorua.

Who wants to fly to Hamilton direct? Really? Fly to Auckland and drive via Hamilton to anywhere else. Direct Flights to Rotorua is a much more feasible idea imho - i really don't see hamilton as being a tourist destination.

Agree with you 100%. Those people saying the flights are 'bad news for Hamilton' might want to take a look at recent history. Hamilton's done much better out of this recent re-model of NZ's second tier international airports than some have! At least Hamilton still HAVE an international carrier.

I still maintain that Hamilton doesn't deserve an International service as long as it remains as close to Auckland as it is (which ain't gonna change in a hurry). This is what needed to happen a year ago.

From the rumors I've been hearing, ANZ are only offering this service as competition to Pac Blue international flights out of the Hamilton. Once Pac Blue pull out, ANZ will follow suit... apparently.

Pacific Wings do have permission from the IASC who said they had a "sound business plan" as per this document, but their website and logo are very amateur.

They're using Our Airline's 733 (Nauru) on a wet lease agreement. Interestingly, the former CEO of Air Nauru/Our Airline is running this Pacific Wings operation.

They seem to be a bit dodgy/unprofessional at the moment, and I don't know if the ROT-SYD route can handle that much capacity really. But we'll see what happens I guess.

That seems without a viable fix, not much there other than going by bus were planned tours .. even they can be adjusted to suit the travelers on a bus, I found most like to cell themselves till .. whammo , thro it in their face, I guess it should be the simple plan of the tour G person . .. I don't know
