It's a Stoddard-Hamilton Glasair SH-2R.

Funny how NZ Herald automatically think it's a Cessna...

Reporters,

Never trust them.

Single seat Cessna? They should investigate and not just report.

Still they are hitting deadlines

Thanks Guys

Yep, ZK-NRG (North Shore based I think) ditched in the reserve next to Macleans College just up the road from me- went up there this morning on the off chance that it hadn't been shifted yet, and surprisingly it was still there:

Looks like a very well executed FLWOP, not sure why the undercarriage was retracted though. Apparently it also had a nose wheel collapse on landing at Ardmore back in 2005 also. Look forward to reading the CAA's report on the incident.

The owner has parked it at Ardmore Flying School a few times in the past, it's a nice looking plane and very fast! Shame to see it involved in (another) incident but at least it's not a write-off.

If it was me I would definitely land it with the wheels up, firstly:

As it is such a small place you would want to land and stop smartly, instead of trying to break with the wheels and stop before them houses (or what ever obstacles). Secondly:

As the Glassairs have a pretty weak nose wheel assembly, landing off airfield I would want to eliminate he risk of the nose gear collapsing and the aircraft flipping on its back. Not from a damage point of view, but escape. Imagine trying to get out of that thing up side down... especially if a wee fire has started....

Also, it looked as though he was on a hill and if the brakes failed he would've been at the bottom.

Just to comment on what I said previously, the aircraft has evidently changed owners since it was based at Ardmore.
