Beat this - 1192 km/h

A place for 'real world' pilots and aviation enthusiasts to discuss their hobby

Postby happytraveller » Wed Nov 25, 2009 12:34 am

Had a monster jet stream yesterday on a flight from Mexico MEX to Frankfurt FRA. I was watching the speeds on the monitor and saw for a time a top speed over the ground of 1192 km/h. Worked out that this is around 740 mph in the old money, which is not far short of the speed of sound at sea level (although the air speed was the normal 850 km/h).

Probably the fastest that I have ever been but have any other NZFF members seen a speed higher than this??? So I will start the bidding at 1192 km/h...........any advance?

smooth landings.

You've got me beat as far as I am aware (I fall asleep on those long-haul flights and wouldn't have a clue whats goin on around me).

Well, not sure about in a plane, but in my youth I once topped the speed limit down the Ngauranga gorge on state highway one on my mountain bike...

Couldn't beat that but came close last year with a nice tailwind from Montevideo to Buenos Aires.

High Speed Flight

615 knots GS is 1138 km/h.

I was in a standard Lufthansa 747 400 and I am hoping for a similar tailwind for the Saturday flight from ARN via HKG to AKL and CHC. A few more air miles on the account as well!! I will put up some photos from MEX shortly in the photo section.

smooth landings.

Not sure what speed I was doing. But when the Visa bill arrived containing Flightsim purchases.

I moved pretty damn fast to beat the Mrs to the mailbox. biggrin.gif
