Hello all
On Wednesday next week I am sitting the RNZAF Aptitude Tests to try and get in as a pilot.
If anybody has any hints these would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure about officer ones but I did ground trade ones. I don't think they're all that different, other than the topics.

Number one tip: Don't get stuck on an answer. If you have to think twice, literally pick one out of randomness. I actually did better in advanced maths than I did in basic maths because of the time frame. I didn't finish basic maths because they only give you like 2 minutes or something. I would have done better if I actually guessed the last 5 questions. (I still got all the others right, but if I had been a bit slower, I wouldn't have answered enough to get them right)

Just think about what they want, come up with an answer and if you have to go "oh wait, hang on" then don't worry, circle something and go onto the next one.

It was me and 3 others in my testing session. Only me and one other guy passed these tests which in my mind, were bloody easy biggrin.gif . People over-think and focus too much on 100% accuracy. Focus on finishing rather than getting them all correct.

In saying this though, make sure you get at least some correct tongue.gif

He's quite right, in my experience if you have to re-think the answer to a multi choice question you doubt things and your first instinct was right. If there are 4 possible answers, there's usually one stupid answer, one that's quite wrong, and two that could be right, but only one is actually right if you think about it. Discount the two wrong ones, and if you really don't know, go with your gut feeling for one of the two answers left.

That process has got me through most of life's tests ...

And to add to Matts little spiel; if in doubt always answer C. cool.gif

As someone who sat them twice as many times as he should have, all I can say is be quick, accurate, and if you can't answer it move on.

Study up on your basic maths, really try to nail the practice questions they give you and you won't have a problem.

Good luck with the tests Shotgun.

How basic are we talking here?
adding subtracting multiplying and dividing?

no matter what - no you,ve never drunk to excess and no you,ve never tried smoking anything you shouldn,t have - ( you shouldn't have anyway!) tell the truth right from the start and don't try to fudge as they can tell and it will only trip you up later and again - it shows. as the others said, get the most questions completed that you can - in the unlikely event that you finish the test you can always recheck - I always answered B if in doubt unless it was obviously the wrong one. if this is the physical testing ie the ropes and drums problems etc then watch the others testing with you and be prepared to lend them a hand as it shows you are a team player as well - don't talk stupid while you are waiting around between tests as you don't know who may be listening. no matter how tired you get try to keep a smile on the dial - it's all part of the test.

just some of my thoughts - did my wings course back in 1982
good luck smile.gif

Long division with numbers missing, rational thinking , algebra, trig, time-distance, distance-fuel, time-fuel, rearranging equations. All without "nice numbers" like you get at school, and no calculator either.

The only ones you can practice for a are the two maths ones. The other stuff is all innate ability, things like mental cognition and spatial awareness - stuff you won't be able to train up in a week.
