Yea I heard about this, very sad since it was only a week or so ago since the previous incident in that area.

Don't mean to be negative but it just rules out how aware we need to be while flying in class g airspace with good lookouts and making accurate radio calls. I remember when I was doing my CPL x/c's you get so focused into your diversions and ground speed checks and map reading that most of the time you end up looking inside working out calculations and maintaining your height and heading, despite being told to keep good look outs which you do try your best to do..

Was there not a similar incident from the same area 2/3 years back training flight ? recall all then involved perished .

this one could have very easily happen because with my past experience there is a real "corridor" from say PP to PM (or through the gorge for that matter) going straight over Levin, Shannon and Tokomaru however the Manawatu training organisations like to do ALOT of their training in the exact same area. i always get aircraft that i can hear but not see as i am transiting that area.

Uhh...dont assume things... Read the AIP Plates where it mentions this: http://pnairport.co.nz/framelinks.php?url=...OUApril2010.pdf If you take the time to read it properly you will realise that your previous comment is invalid smile.gif Things have changed drastically in the last 4 years around the Manawatu, the airspace is vastly different.

i do not assume things, Assumption is the mother of all f*** ups.
theres still constantly aircraft training between Shannon and tokomaru etc, whether they are meant to be or not, i am just saying what i have experienced mate,

Not really hi-jacking the thread, just talking about the Manawatu airspace, which is pretty relevant....

and reading the link you posted before confirmed what i was saying, in that transiting aircraft are very likely to go directly overhead levin, shannon etc, however that is where ALOT of the training is taking place. i have been through there numerous times, with most of them encountering an aircraft in my area that i can hear yet not see, regardless of position reports etc.
anyway, different people, different interpretations and opinions.

i feel rather rude talking about this here as i had spent some time with one of the people who was fatally injured in this incident and would ask out of respect that we can let this post remain as a factual post regarding the incident that happened in Fielding, (we are both talking about airspace south of fielding not where tha incident took place)

What a waste of more good lives. The sad thing is, the technology that would help prevent these types of tragedies (ADS-B) is here now, but everyone is bickering about the cost of installation among other things. I know they always default back to "it's the pilot's responsibility to see and be seen" but the repeat pattern clearly suggests that talk alone is not enough.
