Qantas problems again

Read this on the yahoo news, more problems for Qantas. I always thought that the landing gear was a fairly important part of the aircraft.

Qantas is cancelling dozens of flights between Canberra and Sydney this week because of faulty landing gear on some planes.

Five of Qantaslink's Bombardier Q400s will be out of service for about a week so repairs can be done.

The carrier says another overseas operator has revealed problems with a main part of the landing gear.

Qantas says it is contacting affected passengers and will operate extra flights but there will be minimal disruption.

If skids were good enough for the Wright Brothers, perhaps Quantas can retrofit their fleet... imagine the money they'd save on NOT replacing tyres!

SO in what way is qantas at fault? An overseas operator finds a fault, its reported and all operators check for similar issue. Seems to me all is working as it should. Safety first - sorry poor passengers but history shows its better off to disrupt you than put you all in body bags.

It dose say the fault was revealed , someone found a fault in the design ? or was it picked up in the pre-flight or engineering good enough to find a fault .

QANTAS has a very good reputation , it was,t a crash , Media Blowing things up again ?

Yeah good on them for making the call, bad news for Bombardier tho, the Q400 has had a few "technical" issues now huh

The media always do a good job at blowing things out of proportion! Seems like its not the first time the Q400 has faced landing gear problems

hmmm funny that i haven't heard a thing on main stream tv here, would have thought that it would have been all over the news, i guess thye have been too busy covering the election!!!

yup, the great ranga verses jumbo ears election here in the land of oz

i remember that the dash 8 series has been plagued by landing gear faults for some time now, and scandinvain airlines (maybe) had pulled their fleet and gave them back because of on going problesms (i may be mistaken on the airline and final solutions though)

Yeah, the guy is the same though. Notice he says something like "wasnt there an incident just like this recently" .. referring to the hold blow-out, which is nothing to do with an Engine as far as I can tell, I'm not an engineer tho .. also love the way the woman refers to the Engine damage as "an explosion"

I don't think QANTAS is in a great position . Especially with the recent issues and problems they have been having with their aircraft's.

JETSTAR is a subsidairy of QANTAS and I think for a budget airline they have already made their mark higher than QANTAS in the aviation world in all aspects. I think QANTAS is in alot of HOT water already and It will be interesting to see how JETSTAR and QANTAS stack up in the next year or so in the aviation world rankings.

P.S. just adding my 2 cents in that's all. Just an opinion.

Don,t think QANTAS have any real problems .. Still be the safest airline to fly with by records , JETSTAR is 'Q' and hey on my first Intl flight with them it broke down ! end off the day they are only over sized bus's and at least they don,t go aiming for power poles or not tell the driver they have change his route where there is one .

Qantas is unfortunately the butt of the media clobbering machine at the moment. As Air NZ is with TV3's ongoing campaign.
If you look at the size of the Qantas fleet versus the incident rate then it's incident rate is considerably smaller if not better than nearly all other airlines.
Most of these reported incidents are simply outside of their control and no end of maintenance could have prevented them from occurring.
Take the most recent incident with the engine failure out of San Francisco. Looking at the damage it appears to have been a turbine disk that ruptured.
This is like you driving your car and all of a sudden the piston collapses or disintegrates. Not something that you would look at on a day to day basis and
in fact it only ever gets looked at when the engine is up for overhaul.

They may not have had any serious crashes but their fleet has major issues. Just lately engine explosion, prior to that on the same model a fuselage ripping open. Now they Q400's. Not only that but their A330's are still experiencing sudden falls in flight. Also they are going through large amounts of tyres each week on their new A380's. It's coming for that company, and their pilots also need to address their landing techniques (And thats speaking from experience on Qantas). I'll never fly with them again
