See 'The Rock' this Sunday (21 November) - no, it's not the wrestler. It's Wellington Airport's new international terminal, and it opens to the public this weekend. The open day starts with air displays and entertainment in the main terminal from 9.00am on Sunday 21 November.

You can check out the new international terminal, and aeroplane lovers will be thrilled to know there'll be a tour of an Air New Zealand A320; a show by the Royal New Zealand Air Force's Iroquois and Harvard; a Spitfire; a Tiger Moth, Aero Club, Life Flight Trust and displays by the Air Fire Service.

'The Rock' doors open at 9.00am and close at 12 noon - so be sure to get there in the morning if you're keen to check it out. And take public transport if you can - it's free between 8.00am - 1.00pm to take the Airport Flyer both to and from the airport on the day.

What a waste of time and money the new terminal is. very cramped and closed space. And everyone knows how ugly it looks from outside. The designer were ranting about how innovative this is.But truly this was one of the most horrible terminals I have every seen.

And as usual for New Zealand shows the most interesting part of it was canceled due to weather. At least they could open up an A320 for show , it didn't need any good weather !! So disappointing as all events are in NZ. waste of time!

Don't Know about that - went to an event in cambridge weekend before last it was pretty laid back and with some good displays although the RNZAF Pulled out:

they are not all bad

Well maybe I went to boring ones. When you compare aviation exhibitions of NZ and other countries you feel depressed. Yes I know NZ is small place and not up to the speed with other countries but I went to an aviation show in Romania 2 years ago and it was very impressed. Just have in mind Romania is one of the poor countries.

Maybe the Wellies have been swept along by a wave of Nu! architecture..time will tell if it works or not.

But I'll tell you what...the NZ shows have a quality difficult to match elsewhere, you simply have to open your mind to where they're coming from.

I recall an early evening in 1996(?) sitting on North Head overlooking the Waitemata Harbour, with a picnic basket, some frosties and good company, and out of the corner of my eye catching a flash of silver.
We didn't hear him at all, the silver Mustang banked by at eye level, so close you could read the dials in the cockpit as he passed.
A split second later you felt the sound, as he opened the throttle and arced up into the sky.
Later, a Skyhawk came batting in over the harbour bridge and, flare-punctuated, looped 10,000ft over the harbour.
It was a magical lightshow, and a magical evening.

I've been to a few of the big ones, and it is possible to come away disappointed.
Depends on your expectation.

Yeah well I wouldn't want to compare a small show at an opening of terminal to the big ones like Wanaka & Classic Fighters.

Whilst we dont have the big military shows like we had from the 50s to 80s (partly thanks to the break up of Anzus and demolition of the conbat force) we do have some of the best WW1 and WW2 warbird shows in the world ...Wanaka and Omaka are right up there.

Also a show in Romania would draw on the resouces of other surrounding countries ...we aren't within easy distance of any country.

The collection of WW1 (which Mr Jackson's collection of WW1 aircaft is the biggest in the world) and WW2 aircraft in NZ would only be bettered by the UK & USA and equaled by Canada, Australia, Germany and France..but as Charl said it depends what you are into.
