I trawled air nz every day and found some blackboard deals so my transport there and back is a total of $370, I was pleasantly surprised. Doing it on the cheap I could do it under $500 total I reckon but budgeting on a grand for the whole trip

Just seeing if I can scrape some cash together to go. This would be my first trip overseas, and first airshow. biggrin.gif

So do you guys reckon it's worth going to both Friday and Saturday?

Bless 'em, you have to wonder how they stay in business...

With all the money I've saved not taking this one, I can pay for a 2-day Gold Pass and very good accommodation.

Friday is the day to take all the photos, and Saturday cap the lens and enjoy the show.

Andy , the entire show will take you three days just simply not to miss anything , Friday really for the planning and night display , Saturday and Sunday , choose how you best see the air display and or both , at any one day we plan to be tied to the fence ! , RUN to get your spot and be early .

Heh, thanks for the advice - have spent all evening planning and dreaming. tongue.gif

Will probably make a holiday of it and spend some time in Melbourne as well, and catch the train down as per the website (AUD $9.90 return!).

I guess I'm kinda commited to going now, I just bought a new camera today - the money practically flew out of my hands before I knew it...

It's a Canon EOS 500D and is just beautiful, took a few shots around the garden and they look fantastic. I was almost going to buy the PowerShot SX30IS (half the price) with it's incredible 35x zoom, but the image quality looked quite bad at full size and reviews I read weren't too kind to it.

biggrin.gif Well in that case we are all in for a treat , a new camera with a 35X zoom smile.gif

Hah, no I didn't get that one - great zoom but apparently not so great image quality. tongue.gif

Yes, it seems to happen that often cams with big optical zooms sacrifice image quality in some way. Although my Fuji S2000HD isn't 35x, and I was aware that it's image wasn't the best, I've been disappointed. Still, that's what one often gets when compromising, with price as the primary driver... You know what's said about compromise: an outcome that is satisfactory to no one. Although in this case, I'm sure the bloke I purchased it off is happy with his cash... tongue.gif

Bit of an update, some more information has been posted on the website. 34 days to go!

Most exciting, is the preliminary list of visiting aircraft: http://www.airshow.net.au/avalon2011/publi...ng-display.html

Something that caught my eye is the mention of an RNZAF 757 visiting, something I had been hoping for as I've not gotten to see one in person. I dropped an email to Air Force PR and they kindly wrote back quickly and advised at this stage one of the 757s is definitely booked to attend (unless they're re-tasked) and plans to perform in the flying display, as well as being on static display. biggrin.gif

Andrew , you wont be disappointed , there is so much to see , ive always planned a visit with military precision , Friday course the Night Display , your going to enjoy that , during the days always planned to get to the fence line , a mission to get there with cover seats and food and not to mention a very good leather belt to tie yourself to the flight-line for one day only , the other day is used for statics .... the night display also requires a fence to see the full display and enjoy .

One over thing , the night can get as cold as heck , for the even make sure you do have a good Jacket , even Gelong/Avalon can get cold .

Its that price because you've selected Avalon Airport, which is only served by Jetstar and Tiger on limited domestic services. You'll want to be flying into Melbourne.

Its going to cost me $1600 to get to Avalon!! Mind you, it is via BKK winkyy.gif

I'll be arriving MEL on the afternoon of 4th with the intention of seeing the night display and spending the whole of Saturday at Avalon before returning to CHC on Sunday.

I'll be travelling on my own so if anyone is in a similar situation and wants to say "gidday" and share a Fosters send me a PM

Dart out

ps had a good look at and through ANZ's new B773 yesterday whilst it sat on the tarmac outside the Engineering hangar at CHC. Unfortunately the flight deck was off limits by the time i got there but some of my colleagues were fortunate enough, having been on an earlier tour, to talk with Dave Morgan and got to sit in the pointy end!

Thanks Ian, yeah I noted in a lot of videos/photos online from past Avalon air shows that people were rugged up with jackets and tops - so have added that to my list! Incredibly excited, I've got a week in Melbourne and have the airshow in the middle of that (Fri/Sat gold pass!). Flights didn't work out too bad for me, Air NZ all the way from New Plymouth and back - upgraded too so I can hobnob in the koru lounge, and sit in the upper deck on my return flight (747). biggrin.gif
