What is happening with the budget cuts in the aviation area?

What scheme are they putting in place that will scare everyone off being a pilot?

So, What is the verdict?

New student pilots after the 1st January 2012 will have to pay for all of their own solo hours. Classroom instruction etc will still be covered by the student loan. They estimate 100-120hrs the student will have to pay themselves at a cost of approx $30k.

Sooo glad my course starts in 2 weeks, not next year .

I dont think this will scare off the real pilots. Only the ones who arnt really serious about it.

I don't know what you guys a moaning about in my days of learning to fly there were no such thing as students loans or handouts it was pay everything yourself and if you cant afford it don't do it.

Just to really pin the tail on the donkey , even further back , the very start you had to payed to learn to fly in the fledgling Royal New Zealand Flying Corps .

Imagine doing that now...okay please hand over $1m (propbably less but $1m wouldn't be far from the truth for a F-16 pilot) to train on the Airtrainer, King Air, Orion etc

Whilst we talking budget cuts and Air Force it seems the military has come out well in the budget ..in fact the budget has increased slightly

Although they say they're gonna save around $30k per pilot, there gonna end up saving a heck of a lot more due to all the people who won't be able to afford it/can't be bothered to pay for it. Good decision IMO. Also, it only applies for CPL+PPL, so they will still pay for Solo Hours for an Instructor Rating.

I agree with Student loans but there must be criteria. Personally i feel if to qualify for a student loan as a Pilot you must have prove your committement to aviation and hold at least a PPL. Maybe even an 80-100 hours.

How many pilots have decided it is not for them after taking out these loans? Spent 10-20k and given up.

Wasted money. There will be exceptions, but hey, but you can't expect something for nothing.

Hope my opinion hasn't hurt any feeling, i apologies if it does, Just my thoughts

From memory I thinks its about $2m to train a fully operational RNZAF pilot!!

$2m! wow ..I way underestimated

From what I have been told, the verdict isnt out till August so at the moment everything is just speculation. If you say something then please include a verification of its authenticity eg a link to a news site

All the info you need. Its in the budget, so its been decided and is going ahead.

Ooops, nope your right. It is only a "proposed" change so far... but still is quite likely to go ahead anyway...

Budgets are usually introduced pre election for voters to decide. If Key is re-elected, I have no doubts about it going ahead.
