Christchurch celebrates Antarctic Season opening

As part of this yearâ€™s celebrations, Christchurch residents will get to witness a dramatic flyover on the afternoon of Friday 30 September of the US Air Force C 17 Globemaster plane, which will transport expeditions to and from Antarctica this coming season.

The aircraft will perform a â€œwing rockâ€ as it passes the ChristChurch Cathedral â€“ a symbolic tribute from the US Air Force to the strength and resilience of Christchurch.

The public is invited to explore the plane, one of the worldâ€™s largest, with an open day at Christchurch International Airport on Saturday 1 October from 10.30am to 12.30pm.

Hi everyone I am very interested in this and have decided to fly down to Christchurch for the day to see this! can any one tell me whereabouts to go to see this from the domestic terminal? can you get to it from the Antarctic center?

Nice......will be better than those pesky helicopters that buzz the city all bloody day.......and before you jump down my throat, i know a % of each flight go's to that little girl who lost her legs......but now they seem like blow flies hanging around something dead......i dont need reminding that 3/4 of the city is gone.......

Hi Splitpin would you have any idea on where to go for the open day from the domestic termial on Saturday?

Here are some photos of the C17 when I flew down to see it I flew through Wellington on the way home as you can see - also - notice the little tow machines they use at Christchurch airport to back the Dash 8's up with

DASH8 ... You proved yourself , I did not ask but figured how far you would go ! ? ........ Damn the cockpit ! .. You went directly towards the machinery , SUPERB! the Gear , the workings , the share size , and frig .. see so nice a clean or what !

I no that , the airfare was Sooo damn well worth it !

Thanks Ian - whenever I check out a plane the first things I look at are the engines and then the Landing Gear.

ZKCAV - I got about two photos of the hold but they weren't very good because there was about 600 people lined up outside and into the hold waiting to see the cockpit - I waited about an hour and a half to see the cockpit moving very slowly towards the cockpit - If you want me to post them I can

Grrat photos guys..check out the McDonald Douglas symbol on the crew door..must be an earlier C-17 before Boeing took over..actually the serial would suggest late 80s

Nah .. just did that outta spite , many panels and fixtures are the same as ford/holden toyota/mazda .. butt also almost looked russian

... same with OZ and AB only diff is the temp off the beer .

I'm sorry I didn't think of jumping on a jet for a looksie, myself.

Brilliant to climb around in that amazing main gear!
Of course I immediately thought: wish my Virtavia C-17 picked up all those beams and bits.
But they had!
Have I mentioned, I do love my C-17? I believe I have.
Time for a little Real/Sim then:

It s the Who that can do , to compare the real to the simulation , it can be FS9 or FSX .... thats friggen GOOD!
