Yeah, always thought this us-airways livery looked good on the B19d so an all black eagle machine should be pretty mean..

Can't wait to see the Black 777, I personally think the colour-scheme will look better on the 777 than the A320 because the 777s have a smoother looking nose.
I wish they would only paint one of each aircraft type black since it makes the aircraft more special. Why are they painting 3 X Beech 1900Ds black yet not giving any Q300s or ATR-72s the special scheme? I can understand that its easier to put the livery on multiple A320s, since they are being delivered new, but I would still love to see a 737 in the paint-scheme before they are retired. Same with a 767, especially now they have winglets.

Good on Air NZ for doing these special liveries. New_Zealand_etc.gif

The simple reason three 1900s are being done and not other member of the turboprop fleet is down to the fact that several of the Beech's need a new lick of paint so regardless of how they paint them, it is a cost that needs to happen and has been factored into the budget already. No Q300s or ATRs need/are due for a repaint so are not being done.

Ok that makes a lot of sense. Do you know which specific B1900Ds will get the black paint-scheme and when the first will be painted?

Decision on which frames is not yet announced and the only time line I have been told is "early in the new year."

Here is a photo of the latest Black A320, it is registered ZK-OJR and its Construction Number is 4884. It was delivered on 10-11-2011 and i believe it arrived in Auckland this morning. It is leased from Bank Of China. It is currently (as of this morning) outside Air New Zealand's heavy maintenance hangars at Auckland airport.

Unfortunately all but two of the last seven aircraft delivered since December last year have been leased:

A320-200s
ZK-OAB = leased from Air Lease Corp
ZK-OJQ = leased from Air Lease Corp
ZK-OJR = leased from Bank of China Aviation

777-300ERs
ZK-OKM = owned by Air New Zealand
ZK-OKN = leased from DAE Capital
ZK-OKO = leased from DAE Capital
ZK-OKP = owned by Air New Zealand

Lessor Info
Air Lease Corp en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Air_Lease
Bank of China Aviation en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BOC_Aviation
DAE Capital en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dubai_Aerospace_Enterprise

It is disappointing, in my view, that Air New Zealand is leasing so many of its aircraft. sad.gif Not so long ago they owned most of them

It would be interesting to here from somebody in the business the perks of owning vs leasing an aircraft. I guess in the short term, leasing may be a cheaper option, but what about the long term? Most of the AirNZ owned 737s will end up being scrapped I spose. A fairly expensive exercise.

My understanding is Airlines lease Aircraft so in times of financial downturn ( as seen in the last few Years) they can be withdrawn from the fleet and sent back to the owner. This means you do not have your own aircraft ticking over with annual bills and expenses sitting on a tarmac getting charged parking fees. Also many Airlines may own the airframe and choose to lease engines. Therefore they pay by the hour. If the engine has a meltdown they are not up for the huge cost of replacement.
Hence why Air NZ may only own a small majority of the fleet.

With an average age of about 14yrs I'd say there's still a good few years of life in the AirNZ 733s, I guess markets like Africa, SE-Asia and South America are likely destinations?

Yeah, although Air NZ does have the youngest 737-300, there really isn't that much demand for them anywhere anymore. South America possibly, but haven't really heard of much interest in them considering the number of them sitting out in the desert.

I think you will find that most of the 737's were leased as well. So it will be up to the owners where they go. I think you will find even some of the props maybe leased???? New Zealand flying conditions are some of the most severe in the world. Renowned for turbulence and most of all, not many places in the world where an aircraft need a windscreen clean, to remove the salt, after a WLG take off in to a southerly gale!!
