What I can't quite understand is why it has taken so long to unearth this report?

I had a book, Pearse's biography, - sadly lost many years ago - written by Vincent Orange I believe, which if I recall correctly, advocated the claim that Pearse was the first man to fly in a sustained, albeit brief, flight and I don't recall anything about these newspaper reports of 1909. So much for research!

Dart your right and i had a publication and quotes from Richard Pearce , and i was at chance meeting with Dr Vincent Orange , said the Wrights Bros had achieved the first controlled flight and he was only able to get a few hop around March or May 1904 . I had the book also lent it out and it was'nt returned .
