Was washing down my boat in the front yard yesterday when I heard a jet overhead. Looked up and low and behold there's a FedEx MD-11 flying overheard. First time I've seen an MD-11 in the flesh so to speak.

Anyone know how frequently this service is running? Love the FedEx livery and would love to get a few photos of one coming into NZAA.

Hey HW, if you ever decide to head up to catch the MD11 one Sunday let me know, I'd love to see one in the flesh before theyre gone forever

Gone forever? lol
I know MD11s have a nasty habit of crashing regularly, but I think they'll be around a long time yet in the hands of the cargo haulers Dean winkyy.gif Would be great to see one landing/ and or/ departing though. I've only ever seen them resting on the ramp.

Same as me, ive only ever seen one in the flesh once in the US, and it was quietly at rest on a ramp.
I do have to wonder though,..... how different it would be to see one landing / departing, from all the DC-10s ive seen landing and
departing in years past...............

Yeah I guess. I was thinking more of gone-forever-from-NZ-skies really, they're a rare beast down here (OMNI had that tanker land here recently I think) and cargo operators aren't exactly known for their spotting friendly daylight operations, unless you live in Memphis that is smile.gif Also looks like the retirement program even for Fedex is well underway, they have loads of them (60-ish + 60-ish DC10s?) but over the next decade will be steadily replaced.

MD-11 is quite a different beast to the 10 though

It was quite nice being out the airport in the evenings , thats ole Wobblyville , then Christchurch 1973 as the DC-10 was doing its training touch and go s , come the 10 or MD11 they are a pretty plane and by many reports a pilots fave .

Aha, thanks for that logic. Cancel all plans lads, appartently there's absolutely no point in going to look at anything new (to you) in this world if its remotely similar to anything that preceeds or is followed by it. tongue.gif

Towerguy is presumably talking about dots on a radar display in which case yes, once you've seen the Great Barrier Airlines Trislander you might as well pack up and go home. For those of us *outside* the fence though .....

Supposed to be a fine weekend, I might head out to Puhinui Rd on Sunday afternoon and see what i can see smile.gif

I used to love to go out and clear their 727 when they still had it and I still worked at Auckland. Something about it charmed my trousers off.

That's what happens Das8Cap when there is a huge influx of flightsim gear people buying - so many NZ simmers , yokes throttles and pedals and aircraft books tongue.gif
