Diversion due crosswinds? For a 737? That sounds unsual to me- I flew out of AA Saturday afternoon in a Q300, and whilst the TAF did say it might gust 40kts on the ground, we were still up and away, as were plenty of Eagle and Mt Cook turboprop flights!

the crosswind was getting up to 20kts on a wet runway plus windshear and NZHN was up to 33kts crosswind hence the diversion to somewhere where at least it was blowing down the runway

We get to see some great examples in Wobblyville with the Northwesters , they are planning a runway extension to Rwy 29/11 for the larger types 777/340 class , the one thing surprised me and mention was the 737 have issues .. we have all seen the Welly rides on a good day .

The 737 itself has good crosswind limits, for Airwork's 300's the dry runway limit is 35kts but that can reduce to 15kts if there is any standing water.
The thing here to remember is that if you get unstable you must go around and unlike flightsim which isn't that realistic with its wind gusts if you get a good gust at the wrong time across the runway it can ruin your day.

Today I just did a flight in the J32 and it just so happened we were over Auckland city at 3000ft tracking for a visual approach. The 2000 foot wind was only 30kts but boy was it rough

SA227, that wasn't you in the circuit at Ardmore today was it? Quite unusual to have a Jetstream doing circuits at Ardmore!

It was.
Training a new F/O and due to the taxiway restrictions at NZAA they wouldn't let us do circuits there so NZAR was the next closest. Unfortunately the runway length isn't enough for a safe touch and go so hence the low approach and overshoots.
Worked well for us and the TCAS only got excited a couple of times. biggrin.gif

.... And Tauranga? Saw a Jetstream the other day doing circuits

Yep NZTG and also NZRO. On those sorties I normally take 2 trainees and then I have an excuse to stop for a coffee and a stress break in between.

NZRO is actually great for training because they only get 2 ATR's a day and the controllers are happy for us to bash the circuit so they have something to do winkyy.gif

Nice. cool.gif I was with a student in JRA, we were taxiing out just as you called joining the circuit so I called the aero club on the base frequency to let them know there was going to be a Jetstream doing an approach and overshoot so they could wander out on the deck and watch! smile.gif
