Looking through this just before

Stuff - Helicopter Wreckage found

It got me thinking. How many helicopters or even GA aircraft are missing in New Zealand... I know of a couple that they cant find but they know pretty much where they are
its more they just can get deep enough in the lake etc....

I really like that site. It would be cool to solve some of those...

Yes. Relief for the families. It surprised me the wreckage was found in the opposite direction to where he thought it was based on eye witness reports and somehow interpreting the scraps of data.

Always unanswered questions in these CFIT type accidents but why would you fly a chopper into IMC in the middle of Fiordland with minimal experience in either area? It's amazing he kept it airborne as long as he did under the circumstances.

Yup, they found the Hughes at the head of the Humboldt falls, which according to Google Earth is on a direct 227 radial with Milford - the last heading the pilot reported to be on. http://www.findlostaircraft.co.nz/zk-hnw.html , makes for very interesting reading. Here's the stuff article; http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/7987113/He...es-emotions-raw .

Finally I guess, closure for the families, yet still unpleasant and for it be dredged up again 9 years later it must be hard.

Joe.

Oops, just saw your post nzav8tor, it was an effort and a half to keep it airborne I'm sure, but if anything you're right, clouds and high terrain are just not to be messed with at all.

Yea hence the first link... haha

Its quite cool reading through all their findings and what they have worked out to try find a location.
I would be keen to see on a map where they found the helicopter in relation to where they thought it was...
