Once again, the police are talking about their arse when it comes to firearms. .223 is one of the most common calibers out there- just having the round doesn't suggest a "military style" weapon.

First thought that hit me .. it was airborne .. Other was the "Air America" movie .. the local yocal with his one shot popgun .. next thing BANG .. the C-123 s starboard radial is on fire ...... least that did'nt happen .

They say .223 military style... I'm thinking maybe they mean 5.56?

But you can get many rifles chambered for 5.56, and most .223 can fire 5.56 without causing damage.

Its the same calibre. Most cops have no idea, neither do jo public. Stories like this or rather the quoting in the story does nothing productive. Its a strange incident though, thats for sure.

Just to confuse the non engineering type's ... one imperial and the other metric .. Lotta people think for example the M-60 is a whooper machine gun .. but so is the Lee Enfield .303 .. 7.62=.303 .. or .312 in decimal is 5/16 or near enough to 8.0mm but lessor at 7.9 ..

Same size. 5.56 does however pack slightly more punch (higher peak pressure in the firing chamber), something to do with the type/amount of powder used etc. Not quite interchangeable in all applications, however studies have shown that most of the time there will be no harm swapping the two.

Edit: And the Ammo is not the same. Very similar, but definitely not the same.

Close but 7.62mm = .308 cal

BTW .303 is a much bigger bullet in length to a normal 7.62mm long bullet when comparing the two bullets.

.223 = 5.56mm the difference is not in the calibre but in the ammunition type. If a bullet is made for military use then its likely to have better performance and stopping power than training ammunition or other types.
