It could have been all sorts of reasons really such as engine failure or downdraughts or many other possibilities. I don't like to ever say pilot error, its not really fair on our fellow pilots, especially when we don't know. Also, when an incident is put down to pilot error, we have to remember that humans make mistakes, and was it actually a lack of training or other human factors that cause highly experienced pilots to have mishaps?

Well apologies if thats the case however I haven't come across that quote.

While there is every chance a judgement error was a contributing factor to this accident, the Von strip is well known and well used by local operators for forced or precautionary landing practice while carrying out operational competency assessments. In my time flying in the area I was always impressed by the level of knowledge and skill demonstrated by the local pilots, especially the old salts who seemed to know the name of every valley, creek and hillock. In saying that, the training is among the most intense I've experienced and I often wondered at how fine the margins are. Whether this accident has a simple explanation or is the result of a narrowing of margins based on years of experience remains to be seen, if it ever is. Here's wishing the chaps a speedy recovery and a return to class one medical status.
