It seems these days people have to have something to moan about! what about Trains, Cars, Stereos, Dogs etc?

Same old same old...buy cheap near the airport, start a campaign to shut the airport (motorsport venue, etc) for noise reasons, hire a no-win, no-fee lawyer to push your claim, and then find out that planes today are an awful lot quieter than they used to be...

Last flight into NZAA I did kinda wonder what was going on...usually they fly onto Whitford NDB and make a nice lazy approach from the NE.
This 777 started banking essentially over the city, and only levelled wings just about ready for the flare!

Sitting on the RHS we had a grandstand view of everything, including the runway as he lined it up.

If anyone was tracking on the Whitford NDB these days then they would be in for a surprise. It has been gone for years, as has Westpoint, and now they only exist in the FS world.
Soon you will be able to reproduce the flight when PMDG release their 777.

Yep I thought I was setting myself up for something when I mentioned Whitford

The ex-747 captain who taught me this stuff in FS made me go out there and fly all the way back...

So what navaid were they using, before it went "Smart"?

Whitford was the NDB that aircraft used to track on for the start of the ILS approach for 23L. Now that has gone and it is either all done via RNAV, the DME ARC (heaven forbid) or radar vectoring. All the STARs for NZAA lead into an approach so most aircraft will just follow them. The newer 'smart' arrivals are for approved operators only. If you look at the ILS chart below you will see that HD (Whitford) NDB has been replaced by EMRAG and ORESO.

Thanks CP, I suspect this is going to be too hard to build into FS9... Whitford it will remain.
What the heck, my sim is locked in a past era anyhow.

You can update your FS9 navaid and fix database from here.
Of course if you have FMC equipped add ons you can update the database thru Navigraph.

It should be all you need for NZAA. I re worked some of the FS9 approaches for various places a while ago. They may have changed a bit but if you use the FS9 GPS it will bring up more up to date approaches. Let me know if you would like them.

CP, if you have an RNAV equipped AC, do you still fly the ILS approach? Or is it the RNAV approach?

I'm always a little confused and end up tuning the ILS anyway and maybe follow it down or hit the APP button. Are they two different things? (RNAV app and ILS app)

either or. You need to be RNAV equipped to fly the STAR which will get you to the start of either the ILS or RNAV approach. The ILS is a precision approach which will get you to lower minima for the bad days where as the RNAV is non precision with higher minima.
The IFLY 737 flies both approaches well.

Oh yeah forgot to mention there are of course a couple of different RNAV approaches. The X and Y have RNP requirements and have a shortened final approach. They also have different STAR's so the STAR used to get you to the ILS wont get you to the start of these RNAV approaches.
