A select few of you were aware that my first flight was on today and its was great. Not just the flight but the Tower aswell. I got the opportunity to pick the brains of a Dunedin ATC by the name of Nick, great value guy. But first..........my flight.

Jabien (hope I got that right) was my instructor........really laid back bloke. He was quite keen to let me do pretty much everything. It was good to chat away with him and learn about aviation in general.

Yours truly, all gung ho with my top gun glasses on my head looking for my seat belt..........can u see it??? :) :bow:

Now, as some of you are aware, I am a physiologist (a medical science that is the study of how the body functions) and my specific area of interest is Aviation physiology. The way the body functions when flying is not the same as it does in the simulated environment. It was awesome to be able to get a grasp of the 'feel' of flight. I mentioned to Jabien that my interest was in the physiology of aviation and we got to talking about G force and how it effects the human body during flight (no microsoft sim can prepare u for this!!!). Once we were up above South Dunedin at 2'500 Jabien mutted "I've got the airplane" I let go of the controls and continued admiring the view..........then with out warning Jabien banked the c152 over to 60 degrees and pulled hard..........there goes that sensation thing again.......The 'G force' mentioned only moments ago in the flight was now a practical class!!!!!! :lol: This was a c152 not a fighter.........and yet we were pulling about 4 G's (so I'm told). After that steep turn was over it was my turn.........can't describe the sensation......so cool. That was the only time Jabien had the controls, he was more than happy to let me control the rest of the flight including the radios into and throughout the traffic pattern. Was great to have an instructor who's so laid back and hands off. Entered right downwind for runway 03. Was cool to be able to see the 'big guys' around me.......had an ATR and this a320 land just before me.

After the flight was over I got to head up to Dunedin ATC and meet Nick. Nick was rather funny guy over the waves......rather informal. Here's a couple from the tower,inside and out

Cool TJL - yeah the first time I experienced more than 1G - amazing feeling (Tecnams can't really handle much though). 4Gs though? Thats quite a bit for a max rate turn I think.

Also nik, are you doing yourPPL or just doing a few lessons to help your career?

Shes a Cessna C500 Citation, steam powered inside, first era of Cessna biz jets.

Ill add a pic of a C560 but I don't know how! A little help with uploading pics would be great!

Great pics- I was hoping to fly on that Warner Bros A320 to Gold Coast back in January but we got -OJA instead.

I'd love to........but with Physiology taking up most days pretty much 8am til 9pm and much of the weekend, it's abit unrealistic......might do a whole bunch of flight time about mid year when I'll have some time (fingers crossed :D )

I think it's Javen Nick :P I did some aerobatics with him last week, and he's a really awesome guy. Next time you go for a flight, ask to do some aerobatics in ZK-EJV, and ask him to do some loops & barell rolls!

Nick is an awesome controller, spoke to him on the radio last week.

45 degrees is around +1.41G, 60 degrees will be +2G and 75 degrees is +3.86... so I think he may have been exaggerating slightly ;) Although, you did mention that he "pulled hard", so maybe that would have increased the load factor.

If you're interested (and I just know all the high schoolers doing calculus will be... NOT!), you can calculate the Load Factor as 1/Cos X, where X is the angle of bank.

A cessna can generally not maintain level flight above an angle of bank of 60 degrees, they just start decending or stall. But feeling G loading in an aircraft for the first time is a completely different compared to the "G" you feel on a rollercoaster or similar....

Looks like a jolly good day at the airport nik :P

I didn't 320s flew in to NZDN.. I didn't even know it was intl!

When I had my introductry flight the instructor decided she would show me what it feals like descending with out bringing the throtle back and then proceded to tell me "you wont feal that in flight sim" :lol: very neat :D

I read in Wolfgang Lanchschweise's (?) book Stick and Rudder that an aeroplane cannot maintain level flight for extended periods beyond 45* of bank. Couldn't get my head around why though :unsure:
