Flying GA from Australia into NZ how does in works in reality?

Dear friends,
after a long absence on the virtual sky´s of NZ I want to go back. At the moment I use ORBX Australia and I have Vector Landclass NZ and the subscription from Goodzone.. never used... It is time to alter this.
My question... if I have an GA aircraft stationed in Australia how is the correct way to fly from Australia to New Zealand? Are there "Ports of entry" and customs control?
But more interesting is. How can I fly an aircraft like the Piper "Arrow III" (Justflight) the correct way from Australia to New Zealand. Or have I not enough range for this, maybe with a Beech 55 (Miliviz)?

Thinking about the range from Australia in your Arrow III, leap frog Brisbane to Lord Howe Island - Norfolk Island - then the long one to North Island NZ .

This is the first step. Must I fly to a selected Airport?
For example, if you fly from continental europe in to the UK, you have 6 options as "Port of entry"...

I guess from Australia in the Arrow it can only be Auckland tho you can stop at points to refuel .. best example of this was the 1987 Singapore to Christchurch Air Race, it was when they finally stopped at NZCH was the required customs and checks, I'm guessing that is what you are meaning there with "ports of entry" ?

Some useful info here: http://www.australianflying.com.au/news ... he-pacific
The standard port of entry is Auckland, but these guys got permission to enter at Keri Keri.

:D Of course you could always take off in a certain Fokker VII tri-motor from the beach in my avatar, and maintain 104°T for about 12 hours, when you should sight Taranaki...

You can enter pretty much anywhere, but you have to noitify the border control people first so they can come and look over your stuff and stamp your passport. This is sometimes cost prohibitive so they revert to using KKE, AKL, WLG, CHC, ZQN and DUD.

A friend of mine did the reverse in a Seminole going HLZ-KKE-Norfolk Island-Lord Howe-Bankstown and on a different trip to BNE.

Andreas , following Mikes reference, 10-11th Sept. 1928 , Richmond to Christchurch in 14h 25m landing at Wigram just down the road here, was the first Trans-Tasman flight by C. Kingsford Smith , C. T. P. Ulm , H. A. Litchfield and T. H. McWilliam , making the also the first international flight.

That would make for an interesting flight , thinking about it I do have a Lord Howe scenery , be worth having a look at it again.

Oh and then he continued to Perth after that on both occasions, via different routes too.

Navigation alone would made it a fun trip over those legs and distances and to think people complain about air travel today, some simply don't see/look at it as an adventure.

I thank You all for the interesting hints. The point is "flying over land" is a very interesting thing and we can get the things more intensive, if we do it like the real thing. Yesterday in FSX I have flown the last Leg from another "epochal flight" from Port Moresby via the Torres Strait to Cairns in a Cessna 162 via Murray Island, Coconut Island, Turtle Head Island, Moreton Telegraph Stn, Mareeba Airfield to Cairns. It was a wonderful long ride with "speed" around 90 Miles per hour and the weather was not always on my side.
Hope, sometimes in a not to far future i am ready to fly in to NZ-Airspace again.

Yes, "it´s only a game" but in the end I must say, that i have learnt more in my "virtual flights" about our world as in School.

Have found the customs rules for entering NZ airspace. And now I have the problem. The aircraft is sitting in Norfolk Islands and Auckland is so far away.

There was a famous case with a light aircraft heading in from Fiji , Air New Zealand DC-10 pilot come to the rescue in the late 1970's, the late Gordon Vette jumped in to help with the passengers doing their bit as well ... good link here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cessna_188_Pacific_rescue

Try KKE you can still clear customs there. It's not written on the site but I know it can be done
