Gorgeous day in Welly today, as usual <_< . Decided to head out to NZWN given the TU154 was due to leave. Not often you see a big Russian at liddle old welly. She's a fairly robust lady...

Given she wasn't due out for awhile, plenty of other traffic kept me amused while I walked to the end of 34..

You cant beat the smooth lines of the 733..

This gives you an idea of the size of the TU154..

Continue walking walking, nice and close to the fence line here...

Arrived at the end, Bluebird was there as well with his scanner so we kept an eye on what was going on...

And then she started up and taxied..

They don't worry to much about noise suppression do they these Russians...

Now I have discovered that the TU154 doesn't take off, no. It blast's off. I have never heard anything so noisy in my life! The sound waves were hitting my chest with real force to the point I couldn't shoot pictures, it was that noisy. Bluebird compared it to the same noise levels as Concorde. The dust and smoke she kicked back was unlike anything I have seen before at Wgtn.

After she left and the eardrums settled down, I snapped a few more before leaving.

It was great to meet Bluebird, hopefully he will share some of his own shots when he gets home.

Great shots Jon- when you texted me saying the 154 was "coming up my way", do you know if its actually landing and staying at NZAA or just passing overhead?

I kept my ears and eyes open but havn't seen anything overhead yet.

Yes the txts flew around NZ, amazing what a connected world we live in - didn't hear any loud Russian noises up north however, so assume it has gone to roost.

Actually, Jon, the pics of the Russky are interesting alright, but...the shot of the birds is stunning :o

Thanks for posting.

I was hoping that work would continue the trend of the past week and be quiet so I could slip out for a few hours and see this grand bird. No such luck - why do people want tyres on a Friday?? B)

Cheers,
James
