Two pilots were killed performing aerial acrobatics at an air show in Poland when their aircraft collided head-on in front of thousands of spectators. A Reuters photographer at the scene said the collision occurred after a three-plane formation fanned out and two of the aircraft slammed into each other as they attempted to re-converge. The stricken planes plummeted towards a wooded area at the edge of the airfield near the south-central town of Radom.

Its not often pictures manage to fully convey a scene unless you are there, but I have to say that they leave you with a real sinking feeling in your stomach. I have had a few close shaves in the circuit at NZAR over the years and it really makes you think afterwards that should things go badly wrong you will be unlikely to walk away like most people can with car accidents.

At least in recent years airshow routines have been much more carefully organised so that when something as unfortunate as this does occur, there aren't further casualties on the ground.
The guy in the plane in the background in that photo was very lucky, although I imagine the camera view foreshortens the distance between them a bit, but still that must have been scarily close.

Would have been all over by the time that guy knew what was happening
